What are the causes of chest wheezing in babies?

The reason for wheezing, especially seen in newborns and babies a few months old, is that the airways made of cartilage in their noses are narrower than in normal people.

In addition, due to the very small size of the baby's brooches, the sputum-like liquids accumulating here cause the baby to have difficulty in breathing. In this case, the baby breathes faster, which causes wheezing from the nose and chest.

When babies breathe, allergies, infections and liquid fillings in the airway cause a wheezing sound as they will further block the baby's already narrow nose.

Symptoms of Chest Wheezing in Babies

There are many symptoms of chest wheezing, the incidence of which increases due to air pollution and increased infections. Symptoms of chest wheezing that parents often observe;

  • rapid breathing,
  • Movements in the nasal passages due to the need for rapid breathing,
  • For the same reason, movements seen in the thorax,
  • The pit formed between the neck muscles and the rib muscles towards the chest due to breathing,
  • Bubbles formed by mucous fluid in the nose. (This also indicates that the nostril is blocked.)

Types of wheezing in babies

If your baby is making a whistling wheezing, it's most likely because of fluid in his nose. If your baby has a deep wheezing sound while breathing, it means that the rustling that occurs in the trachea tube in the throat during breathing turns into wheezing until it reaches the nose. This condition is usually caused by a temporary respiratory disease called tracheomalacia.

If your baby is wheezing with a crackling sound, your baby has a build-up of phlegm in his throat. In this case, you can apply to the medicines given by the doctor or natural methods for your baby's expectoration. The type of wheezing that is caused by viruses, infection, allergies or fluid accumulation in both the bronchi and the airway and the respiratory tract is the wheezing mixed with whistling sound. In such a situation, a doctor should be consulted without wasting time.

In general, these diseases can cause wheezing.

  • Allergy,
  • Hay fever,
  • Asthma,
  • whooping cough,
  • Pneumonia,
  • respiratory tract infections,
  • Foreign matter entering the trachea,
  • Smoking, exposure to nicotine smoke.

In which cases should a doctor be consulted?

Although chest wheezing is considered normal up to a certain point, a doctor should be consulted in some situations. These situations are;

  • If coughing and wheezing increase rather than decrease,
  • If breathing becomes more frequent,
  • The baby's skin color is pale or purple,
  • If the baby is extremely tired,
  • If the fever has risen,
  • If you only have a discharge from one side of your nose,
  • If the baby refuses to eat, you should definitely go to the doctor.

What should be done for chest wheezing in babies?

The most known method in this regard is saline solutions. Since the mucous fluid is not secreted sufficiently in babies, it dries up very often. Since the baby does not have an incentive to create pressure inside the nose, you can relieve dryness with saline solutions. You can also take medical drops, physiological saline and sea water. You can also use nasal aspirators.
