Answering Defense Turk's questions after the Air and Space Vehicles Design Laboratory opening program in partnership with TAI and ITU, Temel Kotil announced that the MALE class UAV system ANKA flew with the domestic and national PD-170 engine. Temel Kotil said, “You said that Anka flew with a domestic engine? Is this engine PD-155 or PD-170? to our question, “Yes, it flies with the PD-170.” made a statement.

The Operative UAV Engine Project, signed between TEI and the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) on 27 December 2012, included the development of a turbodiesel aviation engine with superior technical features in line with the needs of MALE class unmanned aerial vehicles, with domestic facilities.

PD170, which was carried out for the engine needs of domestic UAVs, especially ANKA UAV, made its first flight with ANKA UAV on 27 December 2018. An engine that is more powerful and less fuel consuming than ANKA's engine imported from abroad. In addition, the PD170 is planned to be used in AKINCI TİHA (AKINCI-C) and Bayraktar TB3 UAVs.

PD-170 Engine

Stating that in January 2021, negotiations were held with Thailand, Malaysia, Pakistan and even the USA for the export of the PD170 UAV engine, TEI General Manager Prof. Dr. Mahmut Faruk Akşit stated that it is a product that stands out with its fuel savings and cost. Regarding the PD-170, Akşit said, “We are proud to say that there is no UAV engine with this performance in this class in America. Of course they have their own motor company. But there is no one who can produce this power with this fuel consumption at a high altitude as ours. Even they are interested.” he said.
