The historical Karaköy Tunnel, the second oldest subway in the world after London, celebrated its 147th anniversary. The Karaköy Tunnel and Funicular Station, which has witnessed many great events for 1.5 centuries from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic and has served countless generations, continues to carry passengers without any problems.
A special ceremony was held in the historical Karaköy Tunnel yesterday. IETT Deputy General Manager Murat Altıkardeşler, heads of departments, unit managers and employees attended the ceremony. The ceremony started with a minute of silence and the National Anthem.
Speaking at the ceremony, IETT Deputy General Manager Murat Altıkardeşler reminded that Tünel, which has been shuttled between Karaköy and Istiklal Street for 147 years, is one of the historical textures that make Istanbul Istanbul. It is also the story of the national struggle, the occupation of Istanbul and its liberation, the first strikes and the establishment of the first workers' organizations. Today, we, as people who have witnessed a very short period of this journey and have had a small share in this journey, carry out all our work with the awareness that the main thing is this legacy left to us. This journey will continue after us.”
After the ceremony, the “Journey to History” Exhibition, which includes photographs of historical tunnels, was visited. The exhibition will be open to all Istanbul residents traveling through the Karaköy Tunnel.
