Don't Let Knee Pain Limit Your Life

Knee pain is among the problems experienced by almost everyone in daily life. In addition to innocent reasons such as incorrect sitting position, improper use of the knee, osteoarthritis (cartilage wear), trauma, joint inflammation or rheumatic diseases can also cause knee pain. In order to get rid of knee pain that restricts social activities and to be free of movements; While methods such as lifestyle regulation, strengthening of the muscles around the knee, and drug therapy can be applied, surgical interventions may be required in more serious problems. In this field, robotic prosthetic surgery stands out as a method that increases patient comfort. Prof. from Memorial Şişli Hospital Orthopedics and Traumatology Department. Dr. Olcay Güler gave information about knee pain and treatment methods.

Pay attention to these to avoid pain in your knee

Knee pain, which is often seen in advanced ages, can actually be a problem at almost any age. Knee pain can be caused by many reasons. Chronic knee pain is more common; It can be caused by wrong sports movements, being overweight, using the wrong shoes while doing sports, sitting problems, working on the knee for a long time. Although this type of pain limits social life and movements, it can be resolved by taking simple measures such as weight control and regular exercise with small changes in lifestyle. Especially every extra weight puts an extra load on the knees, increasing both the severity of the pain and the risk of injury and osteoarthritis. It is possible to minimize knee pain that can be experienced with simple precautions to be taken in daily life.

Make the right choice of shoes. Choosing shoes suitable for the sport or activity performed is important in minimizing the abnormal load on the knees.

Watch your weight. Weight is one of the most important risk factors that increase the pressure on the knee joints.

Strengthen the knee muscles. Strengthening the knee muscles and preparing the muscles before sports, especially with exercises, both reduce knee pain and prevent possible injuries.

Avoid movements that force your knee. In addition to the movements that can be experienced while doing sports, activities such as working on the knees for a long time or wiping the floor in daily life should be avoided.

Robotic surgeries come to the fore in treatment

Among the most common causes of chronic pain in the knees; cartilage damage, meniscus injuries, knee cruciate ligament tears, cartilage wear (osteoarthritis) known as calcification. The pain experienced as a result of these disorders increases day by day and over time, the pain begins to completely restrict movements. For chronic knee pain, it is necessary to identify the problem first. After the disease is revealed, specific treatments should be planned for the problem and the patient. Physical therapy and rehabilitation, regular muscle-strengthening exercises and drug treatments are among the most frequently applied conservative methods recommended to almost every patient. However, treatments for the disease are necessary for the solution.

Injection treatments: Injection treatments, also known as intra-articular needles, can be applied to reduce complaints, especially of cartilage damage. Common injections include PRP, stem cell, hyaluronic acid and cytokine injections. Among the people, especially PRP and stem cell therapy are regarded as a magical method. Although positive results have been obtained in PRP and stem cell treatment, these methods are still supportive of the main treatment. Intra-articular injections can be applied to reduce complaints.

Meniscus surgery: Meniscus repair, meniscus transplantation or cleaning of the torn part of the meniscus can be applied in patients with complaints related to meniscus tear. Repair of meniscus tissue in suitable patients is important for the preservation of the knee joint. Meniscus transplantation can be applied in patients who have had the entire meniscus surgically removed.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Surgery: Articular cartilage wear is an important problem in patients who are not treated after anterior cruciate ligament injury. Reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament is very important for the long-term health of the knee joint in patients with anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Cartilage transplant; It is a preferred surgical method in patients whose cartilage damage is limited to a certain area. This treatment can be preferred especially in young patients, in cases where other treatment methods have failed.

High tibial osteotomy: It is preferred in patients with cartilage wear and/or “O” leg deformity only on the inner side of the knee. In this method, the aim is to direct the excess body load on the inner part of the joint to the healthy outer part of the joint. When performed in appropriate patients, the patient's own joint protection is ensured and the need for prosthesis can be delayed.

Half knee prosthesis: It is applied only in patients with severe wear on the inner or outer side of the knee joint. It is the replacement of only the worn part of the knee joint with an artificial joint. In this way, it allows the knee to regain its normal range of motion.

Knee cap prosthesis: It is the replacement of the worn knee cap joint with an artificial joint. It is aimed for comfort in knee bending and climbing stairs.

Total knee replacement: It is a special surface coating technique of the worn and worn knee joint consisting of special alloy metals and a compressed special plastic implant. The target in knee replacement surgery; by breaking contact between impaired articular surfaces; It is to obtain a joint that is pain free, can walk as much as it wants and can go up and down stairs.

Robotic prosthesis surgery: According to classical prosthetic surgery; Robot-assisted prosthetic surgeries, which offer advantages such as faster healing, more tissue protection, and longer prosthesis life, have come to the fore in treatment in recent years. Robot-assisted prosthesis surgery can ensure that the most suitable prosthesis size is determined for the patient before the operation and applied without any problems during the operation.
