Within the scope of the "Zero Waste Project" initiated to control recyclable wastes, 25 trees have been saved from being cut with the recycling of 425 tons of paper so far, with the work implemented in the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality service building.

The "Zero Waste Project" was initiated by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization to control recyclable wastes in all of Turkey, especially in public institutions and organizations, universities, schools, hospitals, shopping centers and places with high population. Within the scope of the project, which aims to prevent waste, use resources more efficiently, reduce the amount of waste generated, establish an effective collection system and recycle waste, Bursa Metropolitan Municipality has also covered a significant distance in transformation. In order to ensure that the wastes are separated at the source, separate collection boxes for waste were placed on all floors in the Metropolitan Municipality service building, and all personnel were trained on the importance of recycling and the zero waste project.

Big savings

Bursa Metropolitan Municipality, which received a 'Zero Waste Certificate' from the Provincial Directorate of Environment and Urbanization with its performance on zero waste, has recycled 2019 tons of paper in its service building since the beginning of 25, thus avoiding cutting 425 trees. In addition to saving, 18,6 barrels of oil were recovered by the conversion of 303 tons of plastic from the municipality building with zero waste, which is also an important environmental project. Within the scope of the project, 6,7 tons of raw material was saved by recycling 8.04 tons of glass, 6 tons of raw material was saved with the recycling of 7,8 tons of metal and 3852 kilowatt-hours of energy were saved.

training attack

In addition to the new service building of the Metropolitan Municipality, the Department of Social Services, the Zoo and the additional service building of Altınova received a Zero Waste Certificate, and training activities on this subject were accelerated. The Metropolitan Municipality started the zero waste volunteers movement in households and estates in order to make the zero waste management system widespread throughout Bursa. In this context, firstly, in Osmangazi, Yıldırım, Nilüfer and İnegöl, in order to obtain zero waste certificates for approximately 300 sites with more than 50 households, the Provincial Directorate of Environment and Urbanization, Osmangazi, Yıldırım, Nilüfer and İnegöl district municipalities and Bursa City Council under the coordination of the Metropolitan. meetings were held. In line with these meetings, training was given to 20 volunteers of the Bursa City Council Zero Waste Working Group, who will take charge of the sites for awareness-raising activities on the subject. Volunteers will carry out awareness raising activities and give trainings to approximately 60 thousand residents of the site after these trainings. In addition, zero waste training was given to 100 BUSMEK personnel and 15 thousand students.

Resource limited, consumption high

Metropolitan Mayor Alinur Aktaş, who gave the start of the project himself in 2018, said that consumption has increased rapidly due to the increase in population, and that it is of great importance to prevent waste due to limited resources. Expressing that they have done the necessary work as the Metropolitan Municipality for the Zero Waste Project to reach its goal, Mayor Aktaş said, “The Zero Waste Project will contribute to the acceleration of the works carried out on the scale of Bursa and to increase the waste collection efficiency. We have achieved significant savings with the transformation achieved within the scope of the project so far. As a metropolitan city, our determination on this issue will continue,” he said.
