The 15th Travel Turkey Izmir-International Tourism Fair and Congress, hosted by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, was opened in Fair Izmir. Organized by İZFAŞ and TÜRSAB Fairs with the support of İzmir Chamber of Commerce, TÜRSAB, TÜROFED, İzmir Foundation, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Ministry of Commerce, the fair added TTI Outdoor – Camping, Caravan, Outdoor and Equipment Fair to its structure this year. The fair brought together Turkey's and the world's leading tourism stakeholders in Izmir. World tourism trends and Turkey's historical and cultural values will be introduced at the fair, which will bring together 2 exhibitors from 4 provinces and 2021 countries with visitors from 22 countries between 5 – 500 December 58.
“Together we will succeed”
Making the opening speech of the fair, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer drew attention to the tourism potential of Turkey and İzmir. Soyer said, “We were shocked by the findings obtained in a cave in Dikili just last week. While we are talking about a history of 8 thousand 500 years, we will now start talking about a history of 14 thousand years. We live in an extraordinary geography with its climate and historical background. In fact, we do not get a share that is compatible with the opportunities that all this potential gives us. This is what we're after. We deserve much more and together we will achieve it. With this fair we organized after the pandemic, we say from Izmir and Turkey to the whole world, 'We exist and we are determined to get our share of tourism from the world'.
“We have to achieve common sense, harmony and solidarity in tourism”
Pointing out the importance of common mind and harmony in increasing the tourism potential of the city, Mayor Soyer said, “We are here together with all our stakeholders. This is a very meaningful and valuable meeting. Because results can only be achieved if this synergy is revealed by working together. We experience the peace and happiness of achieving this. We have to achieve common sense, harmony and solidarity in tourism more than ever before. Comparison of Berlin and Moscow was made. In fact, we are leading the way by holding this fair today, above all. We are giving the message to the whole world that 'we exist and we will achieve much better together' from İzmir," he said.
“Turkish people are shouting their claim in tourism from Izmir”
Ahmet Misbah Demircan, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey, said, “There has been no tourism fair in the world for two years. But with this fair, Turkish people are once again shouting to the world that they have a claim in tourism from Izmir, its culture, history and dynamism. Therefore, I applaud those who contributed to this fair.”
“This fair is an indication that the coronavirus will go away”
İzmir Governor Yavuz Selim Koşger said, “In 2022, tourism will revive in all destinations and reach the point it deserves, as in İzmir. We always say that Turkey and Izmir are not at the point they deserve in tourism. For this, I believe that together, all components will show unity and carry our country to the point it deserves.”
“We see İzmir and Tunç Soyer as pole stars”
Edirne Mayor Recep Gürkan pointed out that tourism is in search of recovery after the pandemic period, which the whole world has been through, and noted that people started to change their understanding of tourism with the effect of the pandemic. Stating that they closely follow the works of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Gürkan said, “We see Izmir, the capital of liberation, and my dear friend Tunç Soyer, as a pole star, both in municipality and urban life. Izmir and Edirne are identical cities in a sense. With its life, culture, history, past and future.”
“We fought a superhuman struggle”
TÜRSAB Chairman of the Board of Directors Firuz Bağlıkaya said, “We have fought a superhuman struggle for the tourism sector to survive in two years, and we continue to do so. We all know before the pandemic. Here we are rebuilding post-pandemic. We are excited about this. We know that we will not start from where we left off in tourism and that the old ways will not work. At Travel Turkey Fair, we manage to grow and become stronger as the common mind of İzmir. New rules will emerge in the coming period. I believe that we will find opportunities to see the developments in Turkey and the world and to accelerate our work for the future at our fair.”
Izmir has the potential to become the capital of tourism
Mahmut Özgener, Chairman of the Izmir Chamber of Commerce, said, “It is time for our fair to become an event featuring destinations from all over the world, to be considered indispensable for tourism professionals, in short, to break out of its shell and become one of the most important tourism fairs in the world. For this, we should focus on studies that will increase international participation and procurement committees. İzmir has the potential to become the capital of high-quality and high-end tourism, boutique tourism, digital nomads, qualified cultural tourism and sustainable tourism, and green and digital economies. This is why we are opening another valuable fair with our Travel Turkey İzmir Fair.
First cruise arriving in 2022
Yusuf Öztürk, Head of İzmir Branch of İMEAK Chamber of Shipping, said, “With the contributions of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, our first cruise ship will anchor in İzmir in the first April of 2022. The cruise tourist number, which had increased to 600 thousand before that, reaches the place it should be in İzmir again. From now on, we think that we should have come to a point where we can serve more qualified tourists instead of being a cheap country. For this, fluctuations in the exchange rate must be prevented,” he said.
İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer hosted the opening ceremony held in the Fair İzmir Hall B, as well as Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Ahmet Misbah Demircan, former Minister of Science, Industry and Technology Faruk Özlü, İzmir Governor Yavuz Selim Koşger, Diyarbakır Governor Münir Karaloğlu, Çanakkale Governor İlhami Aktaş, Muğla Governor Orhan Tavlı, Balıkesir Governor Hasan Şıldak, Nevşehir Governor İnci Sezer Becel, TÜRSAB Chairman of the Board Firuz Bağlıkaya, Guest of Honor Provincial Mayor Recep Gürkan, deputies, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Mustafa Özuslu, Turkey Mayors from various provinces and districts, Izmir district mayors, diplomatic representatives, heads of chambers and non-governmental organizations, and many tourism professionals attended.
