The “Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul Freight Train Project” between Turkey, Iran and Pakistan, which was implemented in 2009 and stopped in 2011, started again with the train departing from Islamabad.
Rail freight transportation on the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul line resumed after 10 years. A ceremony was held at the Margalla Train Station in Pakistan's capital Islamabad for the "Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul Freight Train Project", which was implemented between Pakistan, Iran and Turkey in 2009 but was terminated in 2011 due to the developments in Pakistan.
Pakistan Railways Minister Azam Khan Swati, Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Turkey's Ambassador to Islamabad İhsan Mustafa Yurdakul, Iran's Ambassador to Islamabad Muhammed Ali Huseyni, officials from the Economic Cooperation Organization and other guests attended the ceremony. After the ceremony, the freight train departed from Margalla Train Station to go to Istanbul via Tehran.
Pakistani Foreign Minister Qureshi stated that he is pleased with the resumption of rail freight transport and that it will play an important role in regional connectivity and contribute to the regional economy.
Minister of Railways Azam Khan Swati also emphasized the importance of rail freight transport between the three countries, noting that this service will open new business avenues in the region.
Swati stated that train services will start for passengers after the transport train.
