Stating that Capgras syndrome is a rare disorder that is defined as delusional misidentification disorders and goes with persistent delusions, Psychiatrist Dr. Dilek Sarıkaya said, “This syndrome was first described in 1923 by Capgras and Reboul-Lachaux. It was accepted that this syndrome, which was believed to be very rare at the time it was first described, may later be encountered more frequently than anticipated. said.

Specialist Dr. Dilek Sarıkaya said that in Capgras syndrome, which is also known as impostor syndrome or Capgras delusion, a person believes that "a relative has changed his face with a lying fraudster who wants to replace him". Dr. Sarikaya continued:
“For example, one may accuse one's spouse of being a fraudulent person trying to imitate his real spouse. It can be not just a person who is accused of fraud, but also an animal, an object or an entire house. It is also common to think that others have replaced their parents. These delusions lead to communication problems. Fears such as skepticism, feeling in danger and constantly being on the alert can sometimes pose a danger to the patient and his/her immediate surroundings. The disease is mostly seen in women, and the age range extends from adulthood to old age.”
Often seen with schizophrenia
Stating that Capgras syndrome is caused by a problem in the face recognition system of the brain, Sarıkaya said, “It is often seen together with psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. Sometimes it can manifest itself as the first period symptoms of schizophrenia. In most of the cases, the psychosis is of paranoid type. It is known that Capgras syndrome can also be seen in mania and psychotic depression. It can also occur due to organic causes such as brain tumors, dementia, cerebral hemorrhages and cerebral vascular occlusions at a rate of 25 to 50 percent. Capgras syndrome can affect between 16 and 28 percent of people with dementia with Lewy bodies and about 15 percent of people with Alzheimer's.” used the phrases.

Emphasizing that Capgras syndrome is a disorder that must be treated by determining the cause of these symptoms, Psychiatrist Dr. Dilek Sarıkaya said, “These people must undergo a detailed neuropsychiatric evaluation and determine whether there is an underlying organic cause.
