The deformity of the so-called prominent ear (Sail ear), which causes school-age children to be ridiculed, can negatively affect the psychology of children. Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon Associate Professor İbrahim Aşkar stated that prominent ear operations are performed very easily with the developing technique and technology. He stated that along with prominent ear operations, ear reduction surgeries have become very common among young people.
Prof. Dr. İbrahim Aşkar said that large or prominent ears can affect the psychology of children negatively. Stating that prominent ears, which are more common in boys, can be corrected with a short operation, Assoc. Aşkar said, "Spotted ears, which are called the fact that the ear is curved forward more than it is, occur as a result of the inability of the ear folds to fully develop."
“This image, which often disturbs our school-age children, can be corrected with a short operation. It is mostly requested by male patients. Prominent ear surgery can be performed after 5-6 years of age. In any case, patients come to the doctor at this age because they are the subject of ridicule at school age. Stating that it is not surgery that is dangerous and has risks, Dr.Aşkar said that ear aesthetic surgery can be performed at any age.
Dr.Aşkar said, “If your child complains about this situation, you may face serious psychological problems in the future. On the other hand, if the child does not want this operation and change, he should not be forced to undergo the operation. After the cartilage tissue of the auricle is opened, cartilage incisions or rasp thinning can be made at appropriate places to provide the appropriate “Y” shaped fold. Then, permanent stitches are placed on the cartilage to shape the ear. Thus, the ear is tilted backwards and its angle with the head is reduced.
Stating that the person's stress was eliminated with the prominent ear surgery, which completely healed within two weeks, Dr. Aşkar said that among the requests received, ear aesthetics is quite high due to ear reduction or tearing of earring holes.
