Department of Earthquake Risk Management and Urban Improvement launched a series of public conferences in the Capital in order to raise social awareness. To the conference held at the Metropolitan Municipality Conference Hall; Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Berkay Gökçınar, Deputy Secretary General Mustafa Kemal Çokakoğlu, Head of Earthquake Risk Management and Urban Improvement Department Mutlu Gürler, heads of departments, academics, NGO representatives, many disaster volunteers and citizens attended.

THEME: “ANKARA RESISTANT AGAINST DISASTERS”

With the "Disaster Awareness Conference Series" themed "Ankara Resilient Against Disasters", it is aimed to raise awareness of all capital citizens about natural disasters, while Prof. Dr. Gürol Seyitoğlu “Turkey's Active Fault Lines and Ankara's Earthquake Reality”, Prof. Dr. Murat Ercanoğlu, on the other hand, shared his knowledge and experiences on "Our Perspective on Landslides in Turkey in General and Ankara in Specific".

Pointing out that local governments have great responsibilities in natural disasters, Deputy Secretary General Mustafa Kemal Çokakoğlu said:

“Our valuable search and rescue team, which participated in disasters on behalf of Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, is with us. I would like to express my gratitude to them once again on behalf of the entire municipal organization. They worked devotedly in many lifesavings, especially in the Elazig earthquake. In these conferences, we will receive very valuable information about the earthquake and the measures taken. First of all, I would like to draw attention to one issue. Disaster response plans are the plans that determine all the actions to be taken before, after and during the disaster in Turkey. Within the framework of these plans, an auxiliary task has been assigned as the main solution partner to all other local governments such as Ankara Metropolitan Municipality. It requires a management that can take decisions very quickly, change places, change decisions, and struggle with determination. Disasters in Turkey; revealed that local government units should be included in the game not only as a solution partner, support partner, but also as a major partner with this disaster problem from start to finish. We saw it in the last flood. The activities of both the municipalities in the region and the municipalities that intervene from the outside have become extremely important. I believe that the disaster awareness conference series is extremely important due to the contributions it will make to Ankara Metropolitan Municipality.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF COOPERATION IN NATURAL DISASTERS

Mutlu Gürler, Head of Earthquake Risk Management and Urban Improvement Department, stated that they were happy that the conference attracted great interest from the first day, and made the following assessments:

“We have faced disasters all over Turkey since the first day we took office. In this meeting, knowledge will be shared and the equivalents of our knowledge and experience in the academic world will be reviewed. We have seen this in floods, fires and earthquakes: The Republic of Turkey has been running after every disaster in the last quarter century. We have also seen that city and forest fires are intertwined. We are holding the first meeting. We want to create a new roadmap in each session by the relevant experts of different professional groups.”

prof. Dr. Gurol Seyitoglu and Prof. Dr. The conference, which continued in the form of questions and answers after the presentations of Murat Ercanoğlu, ended with the presentation of plaques and certificates of appreciation.
