Gynecologist, Sex Therapist, Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Op.Dr.Esra Demir Yüzer gave important information about urinary incontinence. Involuntary urinary incontinence, medically called urinary incontinence, is defined as urinary incontinence or loss of bladder (urinary bag) control and is a very common disease in society, especially in women.

Women with urinary incontinence plan their daily activities and social lives in this problem center, and this negatively affects their quality of life. Psychological problems such as sexual problems, loss of self-confidence, anxiety and depression are more common in women with urinary incontinence.

What are the types of urinary incontinence?

Stress urinary incontinence: In this type of urinary incontinence, drop-by-drop urinary incontinence occurs in cases of sudden increase in intra-abdominal pressure such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, standing up suddenly, lifting heavy loads. The most important risk factors are pregnancy, childbirth and menopause.

Urge type incontinence: Urinary incontinence with a sudden urge to urinate. As a result of involuntary contractions that occur suddenly in the bladder, urinary incontinence occurs before the person can reach the toilet. In this type of urinary incontinence, the person goes to the toilet very often during the day and night. If any of these diseases are not present, urinary incontinence is also called overactive bladder syndrome if it does not develop due to another disease.

Overflow urinary incontinence: Although the bladder is full, there is no feeling of urination due to loss of sensation, and when the bladder is full enough to exceed its capacity, incontinence in the form of overflow is observed.

Combined urinary incontinence: Sometimes urinary incontinence can be in the form of both stress and urge incontinence. This condition is called combined urinary incontinence.

Total urinary incontinence: Urinary incontinence, day and night.

Most women see urinary incontinence as something to be ashamed of and are delayed in seeing a doctor. However, urinary incontinence, in most patients, can be treated with simple lifestyle changes and simple drug treatments.

In the doctor's examination, complaints about urinary incontinence should be told without embarrassment. Because the history taken from the patient has an important place in diagnosis and treatment planning.

The situations in which women with urinary incontinence should consult a doctor without delay are as follows;

  • Urinary incontinence with blood in the urine, burning, difficulty urinating
  • Urinary incontinence affects your daily activities, social relationships, quality of life and daily plans

If their complaints are increasing

Today, in parallel with the development of modern medicine and the development of surgical techniques, urinary incontinence in women can be successfully treated. Studies have shown that women's social life and quality of life, self-confidence and sexual life increase significantly after treatment. As a result, urinary incontinence in women is not a part of normal life and is a disease that must be treated.
