Ear Nose and Throat Specialist Op. Dr. Ali Değirmenci gave information about the subject.

What is concha?

'Concha' are structures in the nose, three or sometimes four on each side of the nose and regulating nasal breathing by swelling and descending. These structures swell when the veins fill with blood and shrink when the veins contract.

It has useful tasks such as humidifying and directing the air passing through the nose, nasal reflexes, resting the receptors in the nose, resting by providing the lungs to work alternately.

When Does Nasal Flesh Cause a Problem?

Conchas with normal structure and function only cause congestion on that side when they swell when there is a curvature in the walls that divide the inside of the nose into two. This phenomenon can only be corrected by correcting the nasal wall.

 What are structural disorders?

They may be larger or smaller than normal. Polyps may form on them, and although rare, tumors and some chronic diseases may deteriorate the tissue and thus the structure.

What are functional disorders? These structures, which swell and fall at regular intervals throughout the day, are known as 'nasal meat' among the people. They grow with some diseases or their functions are impaired and they swell more than normal and disturb the person. If the structural disorders occur in certain periods and can be improved with medication, drug treatment can be applied.

If they show permanent dysfunction or have reached an irreversible structure that cannot be reduced by drugs, they are reduced surgically, by laser, by Shaverle or by the Radiofrequency method, which has been used frequently in recent years.

You will have a nose operation even though there is no external skin incision, much swelling and discomfort. Therefore, you will need to take the necessary precautions.

The most common problem in the middle turbinate is the swelling of the inside of the meat with air. This is called concha bullosa. It can cause a runny nose. If it is too large, it also causes nasal congestion. Its treatment is surgical removal of its outer half. In noses with polyps, sometimes some of the turbinates may be polyps. In this case, it is necessary to remove the polypized parts.
