'International Automotive Engineering Conference IAEC', for the sixth time this year; Edited. Speaking at the conference, Uludağ Automotive Industry Exporters' Association (OİB) Chairman Baran Çelik said, “We are in a process where we will feel the groundbreaking transformation to our veins. automotive industry; He will overcome this with his entrepreneurial, well-trained human resources and competitiveness.” Haydar Yenigün, Chairman of the Automotive Industry Association (OSD), said, “We must invest in engineers and technicians for the next 5-10 years. It is very valuable that Turkey's momentum, the leadership of the automotive industry, is sustainable in this period of great change. Albert Saydam, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Vehicle Supply Manufacturers Association (TAYSAD), said, “The targets in the Green Agreement are; cannot be captured by electrification. “There has to be a different solution,” he said. SAE International CEO Dr. David L. Schutt, on the other hand, made striking statements about the roadmap of automotive engineering shaped by the change process.

'International Automotive Engineering Conference IAEC'; focused on the opportunities and risks brought by the radical change in the automotive industry. Conference; Uludag Automotive Industry Exporters' Association (OIB), Automotive Industry Association (OSD), Automotive Technology Platform (OTEP), Vehicle Supply Manufacturers Association (TAYSAD) in cooperation with the American Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International) held for the sixth time. In the event, which was held online with the main theme of “Outstanding Transformation in Automotive”; The latest developments in the automotive industry were shared.

“The process will be very difficult, but…”

Conference President Prof. Dr. In the first session of IAEC 2021, which started with Şirin Tekinay's opening speech, the subject of “Outstanding Transformation in Automotive” was discussed. OIB Chairman of the Board Baran Çelik, who spoke at the session, stated that the market should diversify in automotive exports and said, “Europe is the region with the highest environmental sensitivity in the world… The Green Agreement was signed, Turkey is part of the process. In this context, we are in a process where we will feel the game-changing transformation to our veins. The process will be very difficult, but the industry has overcome difficulties before. automotive industry; will overcome this with its entrepreneurs, trained human resources and competitiveness”. TAYSAD Chairman of the Board Albert Saydam said that in addition to the export of parts, service and labor force exports are also carried out. Saydam said, “Export is not just about selling parts from Turkey to abroad. There is a Turkish flag on the doors of 63 facilities belonging to 160 TAYSAD member companies abroad. This is important data," he said.

Systems that will motivate the young population should be established!

OSD Chairman of the Board Haydar Yenigün also drew attention to the importance of young people in the development of the sector and said, “There is a very valuable young population in Turkey, from applications related to mobility, from software writers to calibrators. The important thing is to create environments that will motivate these people, to establish systems and to increase added value. I believe that the biggest investment for export continuity is human. We need to invest in engineers and technicians in the next 5-10 years. It is very valuable that the momentum gained by Turkey and the leadership achieved by the automotive industry are sustainable in this period of great change. I think you are at risk. The added value and export figures we create are sustainable by investing in people.

“A new dialogue on zero emissions has begun”

In the session, the changes experienced with the pandemic were also mentioned. Attending the session via teleconference, SAE International CEO Dr. David L. Schutt made statements about the change process in the industry and the roadmap of automotive engineering. Stating that one of the key issues in this process is digital transformation, Dr. David L. Schutt says, “Everything is going digital right now. In this way, people also found a way to work together in a virtual environment. And if the organizations are done well, it speeds up the process. New problems also arose. We've also faced different issues with different feedback being provided around the world. “If we look at the way we used to do things we used to do, a new dialogue has started, a new focus, for example, about zero emissions,” he said.

“Electrification is an interim solution, not a final solution”

Haydar Yenigün also said that the digital transformation accelerated by the pandemic process is a journey that will never end. Albert Saydam said, “I believe that the electrification is being acted quickly. Goals in the Green Deal; cannot be captured by electrification. There must be a different solution. But the next nearest target seems to be electrification. This is an intermediate solution, not a final solution. If we want to achieve the ambitious targets of 2050, we must find other solutions.”

It is necessary to create competitiveness in the sector!

Baran Çelik, too, with the game-changing transformation, electric vehicle transformation; He reminded that there is a risk that the rate of locality in vehicles produced in Turkey will fall by as much as 30 percent. “Both the human and engineer resources required for investments at this point are available in Turkey. However, there are problems with the capital required for entrepreneurs and developers to finance this investment,” Çelik said, adding, “The components that will replace the components used in the automotive must be produced with a local workforce, with a local engineer, and competitiveness must be created. Otherwise, the automotive industry that will be created by importing will not be able to maintain its competitiveness in the long run and the industry will lose its leadership as a result of competitiveness.

“There are new expectations from both tools and users”

Stating that one of the most important and interesting moments of the automotive industry was experienced, Dr. David L. Schutt says, “There are systems in the vehicle that interact with each other. And there are new expectations from tools and users. For example, a phone; How do you think it behaves like a tool? In the future this will be even more important. Vehicles interact with both the infrastructure and other vehicles, there is a system that proceeds in this way. Many different skills and vehicle designs are involved in vehicle infrastructure digitization. So is electrification,” he said. Touching on the process brought by the introduction of new infrastructures and connectivity, Dr. David L. Schutt says, “As the case prefixes we have proliferate, things that seem complicated will become easy. We are already faced with a complex mobility. “When we include electric scooters, the system becomes much more complex, but also integrated.”

“Yes, you will be dealing with two-wheeled scooters…”

Haydar Yenigün said, “Automotive is now becoming a mobility system. Those who keep up with it will exist in the future. We need to invest in young people, constantly learn, and when we make mistakes, we need to find and change them. We produce buses, trucks, tractors, automobiles and light commercial vehicles, but when you say drone, it seems like it goes to aviation, but we need to know that the drone will also be our subject and we need to invest in it. As automotive manufacturers; We should also get rid of thoughts such as 'are we going to deal with two-wheeled scooters'. Yes, you will deal with the two-wheeled scooter, you will make an electric version of it and put it in your commercial vehicle, and it will be charged there,” he said.

Data management problem in automotive…

In the session; The investments of technology companies in the automotive sector were also discussed. Stating that technology companies have made such a choice for the management of big data, Albert Saydam said, “How big data will be used is an important issue, and how it can be protected without incurring personal rights is another question. For example, one of the important question marks in automotive is who owns the information created by the driver or user of a vehicle and the person inside the vehicle?” said. Haydar Yenigün, on the other hand, emphasized that how the data issue will be managed in Turkey is an important question mark. Yenigün said, “The vehicles will move forward in communication with other vehicles and infrastructure, not only with the driver or inside. It started to be so. But since we could not establish a transparent system about how this data management will be, that ball is in the middle. Not only the decisions made by the countries, but as associations, together with the organizations in the world, we must come together with organizations such as ACEA, which is its equivalent in all of Europe and America, and define it, so that we can pave the way for this business.

“An autonomous vehicle collects data equal to the size of 30 HD movies in one hour”

Baran Çelik said, “I saw the reason why technology companies invested in this field in a report. The report showed that 2030 percent of the size of the economy created by the automotive ecosystem in the 40s will only be received by digital services, and they want to get a share from it. There are two important issues in the data; One of them is personal data, namely connected autonomous vehicles, collecting all your movements, both the driver's and the vehicle's. The second is the cyber security side. As far as I know, an autonomous vehicle collects 25 MB of data in an hour, which is equal to the size of 30 HD movies,” he said.

Who is responsible for the data?

Dr. David L. Schutt emphasized that data is an important part of the strategic roadmap to be followed in the automotive industry. “Too much data is being collected. Who has the responsibility here, it needs to be determined.” Dr. David L. Schutt said, “When we look at the management of transportation, for example, if there is a problem or a pothole on the road, it is important to be aware of it. The important thing here is that a vehicle passing over it recognizes this, can send it to the wider system, and the traffic can be shaped around it. For example, if my vehicle has an emissions problem, this may be a trend and have important consequences for the company that produces the vehicle. The studies that provide the greatest value in terms of personalization are also very important to consider.”
