“Due to the increase in the use of private vehicles after the pandemic, the use of public transportation decreased and the traffic load increased. We are trying to find solutions to alleviate this burden. We have to implement our ideas faster. We have works on dozens of topics such as underpasses, overpasses, pedestrianization projects, strengthening sea transportation, encouraging the use of bicycles. One of our most important works that will ease Izmir traffic is the viaduct and tunnel project. In a short time, we will connect the viaducts, the construction of which we have completed at a rate of 96 percent, and put them into service. Thus, we will relieve the traffic on the route until the entrance of the tunnel before the tunnel construction is completed. We went out to tender for the longest tunnel in İzmir, which will cost 1 billion liras, together with the side connection roads. The tender process continues”.

What was done?

Construction of the Connection Road between Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Buca Onat Street and the Intercity Bus Terminal and the Ring Road The First Stage supply work includes the construction of 850 viaducts, 2 underpasses and 2 overpass on a 1-meter route. 2 underpasses and 1 overpass were completed and put into service. Viaducts are also 96 percent complete. 45 beams were mounted on 550 viaduct legs. After a short while, the two viaducts will be connected to each other and asphalt will be laid on the viaducts by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Department of Science Affairs teams.

Traffic in front of the terminal will be relieved

Viaducts and underpasses will relieve vehicle traffic in front of Bornova and the terminal. With the commissioning of the viaducts, the traffic jam created by the vehicles coming from Kamil Tunca Boulevard, Işıkkent and the Ring Road at the junction in front of the İzmir Intercity Terminal will be prevented. Vehicles coming from the Ring Road will use the viaduct to pass to Kamil Tunca Boulevard. Vehicle traffic coming from Buca and Altındağ will be taken to viaducts and a Ring Road connection will be provided. In this way, vehicles in front of the terminal will not wait at the light and will pass quickly. Thanks to the underpasses that were put into service under the viaduct, vehicles coming from Kamil Tunca Boulevard were able to reach Işıkkent in a short time, and vehicles coming from Konak direction were able to reach Bornova in a short time.

The 7,1-kilometer route is 35 meters wide and consists of a total of 3 lanes divided into 3 arrivals and 6 departures, and a 2,5-kilometer double tube deep tunnel. The tunnel will be 7,5 meters high and 10,6 meters wide. The tunnel construction will facilitate access to the intercity bus terminal from Konak with the viaducts that are planned to be completed by the end of the year. The total length of the project, which will give a breath of fresh air to urban traffic, will reach 7,1 kilometers. When the tunnel is completed, it will have the title of the longest road tunnel in İzmir. Its construction will be completed in 3 years.
