Depending on the degree of deterioration in kidney functions for any reason, other health problems may occur in the body. These problems include hypertension, heart failure, heart rhythm disorder, impaired sugar control in diabetic patients, anemia, digestive system disorders, bone-mineral disorders, nervous system problems, and infertility. Anadolu Medical Center Internal Diseases and Nephrology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Enes Murat Atasoy shared 7 precautions to be taken for kidney health:
Ensure adequate fluid intake
According to Australian and Canadian researchers, adequate fluid consumption reduces the risk of developing chronic kidney disease. According to the traditional scientific view, consuming 1.5-2 liters of water daily is ideal for health, but a doctor should be consulted for the right amount.
An active life should be adopted
Doing exercises such as walking, jogging and cycling regularly is important for both having a healthy body and getting rid of excess weight.
Blood sugar should be checked regularly
Diabetes ranks first among the diseases that cause chronic kidney disease. Thanks to the treatments to be applied after the early diagnosis of diabetes-related kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy), the damage to the kidneys can be reversed or its rate can be reduced. Blood sugar should be checked regularly at intervals recommended by the doctor.
Blood pressure should be measured
Hypertension can be a factor leading to chronic kidney disease, or it can develop as a result of kidney disease. The higher the blood pressure, the faster the progression of the disease.
Pay attention to salt consumption
The World Health Organization states that the amount of salt that should be taken in a day is 5 grams. However, around 18 grams of salt is consumed on average per day in Turkey. In order to reduce salt consumption, care should be taken not to keep salt shakers on the dining tables, and the dishes should be flavored with spices and herbs such as mint and thyme. Attention should be paid to a healthy diet.
Avoid tobacco products
Cigarettes and tobacco products cause a decrease in renal blood flow. Thus, the kidneys cannot filter sufficiently and waste materials accumulate in the body. Smokers have a 50 percent higher risk of developing kidney cancer.
Indiscriminate use of drugs should not be
Painkillers should not be used without a doctor's prescription. These drugs can cause kidney damage, sometimes in relation to the dose and duration of use, and sometimes independently.
