The electricity needs of the buildings belonging to the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality began to be met from renewable energy sources. President Soyer, who attended the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow as a speaker, said, “We gave priority to studies that reduce energy consumption and focus on renewable energy sources. I hope this work will set an example for all of Turkey," he said.

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç SoyerIn line with the vision of transforming İzmir into one of the exemplary cities of life in harmony with nature, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality has launched another exemplary environmental practice for Turkey. İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, which prepared Turkey's first "Green City Action Plan", published a "Life Compatible with Nature Strategy", and focused on energy production from the sun and wastes to build a city resistant to climate crisis, started to meet the electricity needs of its buildings from renewable energy sources.

The practice, which will set an example for local governments, started in June. AYDEM Enerji A.Ş. won the tender for the supply of electrical energy produced from renewable energy sources by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Construction Affairs Department. İzmir Metropolitan Municipality has also crowned with an internationally valid certificate that the electricity consumption in the buildings of the municipality is used from renewable energy sources. Between June and September, 13 megawatt-hours of electricity was supplied from renewable energy sources. With the use of renewable energy sources, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality saved 965 million 3 thousand TL in electricity expenditures in four months.

It will be an example to Turkey

Stating that they have focused on rail system investments with an environmentally friendly and sustainable policy in public transportation, they have increased the use of bicycles, and they have implemented integrated solid waste facilities to use garbage as a raw material, President Soyer said, “In the past two years in İzmir, we have been able to overcome the pandemic and almost all kinds of natural disasters. we lived. We saw that the only way to be resistant to disasters and epidemics is to live a life in harmony with nature. We carry out many studies that reduce energy consumption and focus on renewable energy sources. This work will also play an important role in reducing carbon emissions in the city and making our city resistant to the climate crisis. I wish this practice to set an example for all of Turkey, especially for local administrations," he said.

Target “0” carbon emissions

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Secretary General Yıldız Devran pointed out that İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, which prepared Turkey's first “Green City Action Plan”, carries out multidimensional studies to reduce the effects of the climate crisis and to create a climate-resilient city. Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç SoyerReminding that the 'Climate Change and Environmental Protection Control Department' was established within the municipality after Turkey took office in line with the vision of creating a 'greener and cleaner İzmir' in harmony with nature, Devran said, “The European Union will reduce greenhouse gas by 2030 percent by 40. Our President around his commitments Tunç Soyersigned the Presidents' Convention. In line with this goal, we have prepared our energy and climate action plans. We are rapidly continuing our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reach the target of zero carbon emissions by 2050.”

An exemplary environmental movement in Turkey

Drawing attention to the fact that İzmir is a leading city in environmental investments, as in many other areas, Devran continued his speech as follows: “We started to meet the electricity needs of buildings with renewable energy sources with the solar power plants we installed on the roofs of our buildings. We have installed 12 kilowatt solar power plants in our 200 facilities. This also corresponds to meeting the electricity needs of 560 households annually. At the same time, we have an installed capacity of 40 megawatts, where we generate electrical energy from waste in our integrated waste management facilities in Bergama, Ödemiş. We are also pioneers in this regard. This electricity corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of 233 households. We also offer a public transportation service with the largest electric vehicle fleet in Turkey. We are the only municipality in Turkey that uses 31 electric utility vehicles”

We protect both our world and our future

Noting that they attach great importance to the use of renewable energy resources to create a climate-resilient city, Devran continued his speech as follows: “Since June, we have broken new ground. We purchased an electrical energy service in which 724 million kilowatt-hours of electrical energy, which is the equivalent of 28 electricity bills belonging to our municipality, is provided from renewable energy sources, not fossil sources. Therefore, as İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, we have zeroed the electricity-sourced greenhouse gas emissions with the purchase of renewable energy source certified electrical energy. By using renewable energy resources, we protect our İzmir, our world and our future.”

Energy cost reduced

In 724 buildings belonging to İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, electrical energy produced from renewable energy sources (solar, wind, hydroelectric) is used instead of fossil fuels. Among these buildings, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality's service building in Kültürpark, additional service buildings, İzmir Wildlife Park, Aşık Veysel Ice Rink Building, sports complexes, local service buildings, elevators on pedestrian overpasses, slaughterhouses, fire brigade buildings, vegetable market and cemeteries is also included. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has contributed to the generation of electricity from renewable sources, while reducing energy costs as a result of competition with the open tender. With the start of the use of renewable energy sources, 3 million 200 thousand TL was saved in electricity expenditures of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality between June and September. By the end of the year, the amount of savings is expected to increase to 5 million TL.
