In the European Age Groups, one of the most important chess championships in Europe, Turkey stormed. Turkey in the 2021 European Age Groups Championship; While winning two European Championships and a European third place, it showed the success of being second as a country.

The 2021 European Age Groups Championship was held between 15-21 October with a hybrid system. A total of 8 athletes from 10 countries competed in the tournament, which was played in 12 categories, 14, 16, 18, 20, 14, 32 and 893 and under general-girls. A total of 32 athletes from all age categories represented Turkey.

Adalar Becomes Double European Champion

In the 2021 European Age Groups Championship, Arda Cankurt in the 10-year-old general category and CM (Master Candidate) Arda Çamlar in the 12-year-old general category became the European champions. In the under-16 general category, FM (FIDE Master) Atakan Mert Biçer was third, while in the 14-year-old general category, CM Yankı Taşpınar came in fourth with an average difference. Competing in the 8-year-old general category, Ege Öz finished the tournament in 5th place.

As a team, Turkey ranked second in the general category with the country score of the 2021 European Age Groups Championship. In the championship where the 6 most successful athletes in the general and girls categories determined the country score, Turkey got 40 points in the general category. In the general category, Russia became the champion with 42.5 points, while Germany took the third place with 37 points. In the girls category, Russia was the champion with 44.5 points, Poland came second with 34.5 points, and Georgia took the third place with 34 points.

“As Turkey in Chess, We Evaluated the Pandemic Period Well”

Turkish Chess Federation President Gülkız Tulay underlined that they make good use of the pandemic period in chess as Turkey, and said, “In this period, we brought the whole country together with the sport of chess with events and projects embracing Turkey. Since championships and tournaments could not be organized due to the epidemic, we, as TSF, paid special attention to our athletes and made an effort to be intertwined with the sport of chess throughout the whole process. We organized our National Team pool camps in the digital world and closely followed our athletes. The success of our athletes in the European Age Groups and the success of Turkey as a team made us smile. The sport of chess in our country continues to run from success to success with each passing day and to announce the name of Turkish chess in the world with its championships. Finally, I congratulate our athletes who competed with the same determination in the European Age Groups Championship, and I congratulate the winners.”

Athletes Will Take Lessons at the European Chess Academy

As per the directive, the first athletes in the championship will be invited to the 2022 European Age Groups Championship as a reward. The top 6 players of each category in the final ranking will be given an 8-month training by the master trainers of the European Chess Academy. All our athletes who have achieved a degree in the championship will benefit from the training.
