Urban Collectif Presents a Revolutionary Transportation Concept

Three French companies, Citroën, Accor and JCDecaux, with a common vision for the increasingly diverse transportation needs of cities, have formed a brand new partnership that reflects the autonomous transportation systems of the future. The partnership, named Urban Collëctif, created a revolutionary transportation concept with the belief that future transportation systems should be addressed with safety and convenience. The concept is based on the open source electric autonomous platform Citroën Skate within the scope of the Citroën Autonomous Vision and is based on pods that offer different services and applications on the Citroën Skate. The concept, which includes three new services named Sofitel En Voyage, Pullman Power Fitness and JCDecaux City Provider, takes autonomous mobility solutions out of the ordinary. Using autonomous, electric and agile Citroën technology, this groundbreaking, open-source urban transport concept aims to lighten the density of cities while meeting the growing needs of citizens in terms of transport, services, security and well-being. This new and tailor-made urban transport concept is based on an open source approach: the Citroën Skate platform can accommodate all compatible pods developed by a partner, thereby expanding its transport and service offerings.

It is seen that the attraction offered by the big cities in the world is increasing the population day by day. At the same time, it is revealed that Covid-19 is increasing the expectations of city dwellers for cleaner, safer, more flexible forms of travel that comply with social distancing rules. For this reason, transportation conditions, which are one of the indispensable needs of daily life in cities, need to be constantly renewed. Autonomous vehicles can help reduce congestion in cities. However, these solutions do not have economic viability in the medium term due to the high cost of autonomous driving technologies compared to the benefit. To answer this question, Citroën, Accor and JCDecaux came together to form the creative and determined partnership called Urban Collëctif. Urban Collëctif has created a revolutionary transportation concept, with the belief that future transportation should be addressed with safety and convenience.

The open-source concept called the Citroën Autonomous Transport Vision; With the electric autonomous transportation platform Citroën Skate, it relies on capsules for different services and applications. By separating the platform from transportation services, Konspet expands its service offerings and offers the opportunity to maximize the use of autonomous technology. Citroën Skate offers unrivaled comfort thanks to Citroën's centuries-old expertise, and can move all pods on demand using a special line. The capsules designed for Urban Collëctif reflect the potential of open source approaches by offering three innovative and highly diverse transportation services. Sofitel En Voyage offers a special urban mobile hospitality. Pullman Power Fitness reveals the most innovative way to do sports on the go. JCDecaux City Provider provides a demand-based urban solution. Using autonomous, electric and agile Citroën technology, this groundbreaking, open-source urban transport concept aims to lighten the density of cities while meeting the growing needs of citizens in terms of transport, services, security and well-being.

Vincent Cobée, General Manager of Citroën, told Urban Collëctif, “At Citroën, we study medium and long-term trends to forecast consumer expectations and needs. We believe this new concept could redefine the framework of urban transport: shared, electrified and autonomous. Thanks to the solution we offer in partnership with Accor and JCDecaux, we are exploring autonomous transportation for everyone.”

Sébastien Bazin, Chairman and CEO of Accor, said: “We are delighted to be working with Citroën and JCDecaux on this innovative project. Active in the local ecosystem with nearly 5 hotels around the world, our group is committed to contributing to the development of sustainable cities while providing more special experiences than ever before to travelers and local communities alike. “Bringing the hotel experience outside the walls of our businesses is in line with our bold and modern vision of hospitality.”

JCDecaux Co-CEO Jean-Charles Decaux said: “Working with public and private partners to develop innovative and beneficial solutions to improve sustainable urban living is fully aligned with JCDecaux's mission. Urban Collëctif, the result of a close collaboration with Citroën and Accor, symbolizes JCDecaux's desire to renew and continue to dream of the urban transport services of the future.

A revolutionary open source transportation model

It is necessary to rethink urban transport so that everyone can benefit from all the opportunities offered by city centers without any disadvantages. The promise of the Citroën Autonomous Transport Vision is to make the city more fluid, more enjoyable and more humane. It's a revolutionary open-source transportation model that offers collective and shared, demand-adapting autonomous transportation. The model in question is based on a fleet of Citroën Skate transport robots paired with pods that move non-stop around the city and promise unique experiences. Citroën Skate is the provider and carrier of this transport. Capsules connected to Citroën Skate, on the other hand, allow their users to benefit from the service they prefer whenever they want. The distinction between Citroën Skate and capsules is the cornerstone of the concept, which offers fluid and creative urban transport. Thanks to the autonomous and electric Citroën Skate fleet, as well as capsules that respond to the needs of partners such as Accor (Sofitel En Voyage and Pullman Power Fitness) and JCDecaux (JCDecaux City Provider), transportation is being reinvented and improved, both individually and collectively.

Offering a multitude of possible uses, this technological solution is based on driverless, autonomous and interconnected Citroën Skates and pods that move quietly and increase traffic fluidity by at least 35 percent. Citroën Skates are designed to travel in dedicated lanes for this purpose. Citroën Skate is suitable for integrating into the urban environment in the most effective and economical way. Proposing autonomous cars for private customers on public roads would be extremely costly, beyond the technological challenge. On the contrary, the Citroën Autonomous Transport Vision relies on the excellent competence between the capsules, the Citroën Skate and the infrastructure. Moreover, the efficiency of the solution is maximized by driving in dedicated lanes or using intelligent fleet management on demand. The new transport platform showcases the know-how, expertise and urban experience of the three partners. The platform built on the technological, electric and autonomous Citroën transport layer: Citroën Skate. The three capsules showcase the concept and scope of the potential made possible thanks to its open source approach. Two capsules developed with Accor highlight two of the luxury and premium parkas in the portfolio: Sofitel (Sofitel En Voyage) and Pullman (Pullman Power Fitness). The third capsule is the JCDecaux City Provider, designed with JCDecaux.

With its Sofitel En Voyage and Pullman Power Fitness capsules, Accor, the world leader in hospitality, has invented “urban mobile hospitality” that will enable all its customers, as well as city dwellers, to immerse themselves in the brand experience outside the hotel boundaries. With 200 years of experience in interior design and French automotive, this partnership has resulted in innovative and bold capsules. During the development carried out with Citroën teams, attention was paid to intermediate quality as well as materials, colors and details. “Each capsule is a bold and modern interpretation of interior and automotive design,” said Damien Perrot, Accor's Global Senior Vice President of Design. and they were designed beyond the standards. We create endless opportunities for the future thanks to this unprecedented partnership, which is highly innovative in both form and content.”

These two capsules can be booked using the daily lifestyle companion ALL (Accor Live Limitless) application, which brings together and enhances all brands, services and partnerships operating in the Accor ecosystem. “The presentation of Sofitel En Voyage and Pullman Power Fitness capsules is a new example of our augmented hospitality strategy,” said Steven Taylor, Accor Marketing Director. We are resolutely concentrated.”

Sofitel En Voyage

The first capsule, Sofitel En Voyage, born from the collaboration between Accor and Citroën, promises a new urban transport and a journey that includes exceptional comfort, stylish services and breathtaking views. Like Sofitel, the first French luxury hotel brand to expand internationally, the Sofitel En Voyage capsule reflects French elegance. Guests who come to go to the best restaurants, the best boutiques, catch the train or plane, explore the city or simply work can experience Sofitel's “French Way” on the go, at their own pace and according to their demands. The Sofitel En Voyage capsule is completely open to the outside, with parallel architecture and glass and wood carvings that create an intimate atmosphere. The organic look of wood carving reflecting traditional French craftsmanship is modernized thanks to the latest technologies and high-precision laser cutting, creating a body that evokes the city of Paris, French furniture and haute couture. This remarkable approach subtly enhances the luxurious and modern atmosphere by filtering the light with a screen system.

The use of flat glass, which acts as a counterpoint, reveals a sophisticated, refined, inviting and warm interior. The floor-to-ceiling blood orange velvet hues of the interior evoke a modest approach to contemporary luxury. The capsule, which has automatic glass sliding doors, allows two or three passengers to sit together comfortably while their luggage is in a special compartment. The interior floating LED strip displays real-time information such as personal messages, news, weather, arrival and travel times. Everything is designed to offer personalized Sofitel service, with the touch bar opening like a flower to serve drinks and snacks, the sound system, wireless chargers and customizable ambient lighting. Complementing the Sofitel service, the touch screen tablet allows video conference calls with the Sofitel concierge to arrange events such as restaurant or theater reservations.

Pullman Power Fitness

Pullman Power Fitness is the second capsule from the partnership between Accor and Citroën, reflecting Pullman Hotels & Resorts' vision of fitness that pushes boundaries. Through the Power Fitness program, Pullman's guest ensemble are invited to take their performances to the next level in 24-hour classes, integrated technology and stylish entertainment. Positioning itself as the leading hotel brand in the field of fitness, Pullman continues to change the rules of the game. Launched in Pullman's worldwide network of over 140 hotels and resorts, the Power Fitness program is innovatively summarized in the Pullman Power Fitness capsule, the modern transportation vision that makes commuting times more convenient to optimize peak fitness performance. The Pullman Power Fitness capsule enables a single user to exercise with rowing and cycling devices located on either side of the vehicle while traveling in the city and expands the athletic energy of Pullman's fitness facilities.

The Pullman Power Fitness capsule gains character with an extraordinary glass bubble featuring shimmering hues of blue, purple, pink and green, as well as bi-coloured louver-shaped patterns reflecting Pullman's graphic and color traditions. Thus, while it is possible to see the outside, the privacy of the passenger is preserved. The consciously created futuristic and pioneering atmosphere perfectly demonstrates the symbiosis between sports, music and light. The customizable sound and lighting system via the LED strip provides a unique effect with three different modes including three colors and light environments adjusted to the exercise selection. This creates a unique, joyful and refreshing experience for the user. The on-screen digital coach encourages the user to adhere to the hyper-connected spirit of Pullman, while route information and entertainment are also offered at this next level of cardio session. The exercise done inside the capsule also allows charging Citroën Skate batteries.

Inspired by JCDecaux's street furniture, JCDecaux City Provider is infused with a timeless, simple and functional design through simple shapes. Inside, USB sockets are at the disposal of passengers to charge all mobile devices. The two interactive screens provide information and useful services for planning and tracking the journey, getting information about cultural, touristic and social life, discovering new places, as well as suggesting activities that the capsule can turn to upon request. Thanks to its open design, JCDecaux City Provider restores the magic of urban travel for everyone.

Citroën Skate is an urban transport solution that can travel to all centers of the entire city in its unique sheltered lanes to provide smooth and optimized transport. Autonomous, electric and wirelessly charged, the Citroën Skate can run almost uninterruptedly 7/24. Moreover, when necessary, it can automatically charge itself by going to designated charging centers. Citroën Skate is a transportation platform that allows the capsules to move according to need and can be placed under the capsules to provide the necessary transportation by enabling demand-based services. Capsules can be placed on the Citroën Skate in less than 10 seconds. Citroën Skate is a universal transportation platform that can be used to move any type of capsule, increasing the use of technology in everyday life. Citroën Skate is equipped with all the technologies needed to move transport and logistics units. This ensures that unnecessary and expensive equipment is set aside and autonomous driving technology is made profitable. By comparison, this technology can never be used at full capacity in passenger cars that spend 95 percent of the time parked, according to statistics. Citroën Skate, a kind of ultra-tech skateboard, embodies all the intelligence and technology required for autonomous and electric travel, including batteries, electric motors and sensors. The maximum speed of Citroën Skate is 25 km/h. Depending on the area, it can also be limited to 5 km/h to ensure the safety of all users. Speed can be configured according to the use of pods to meet demand as efficiently as possible. With dimensions limited to 2,6 m long, 1,6 m wide and 51 cm high, the Citroën Skate has a minimal footprint. Thus, it does not take up space in public areas. Its compact dimensions and non-automotive design make it a smart and universal transportation solution.

Citroën Skate, which has the formal patterns of the ultra-technical lower body used in the 2019_19 Concept, the concept car developed in 19, the centennial of Citroën, offering the vision of ultra-comfortable and extra-urban transportation to get away from the city, was designed with great care. It showcases the technology within the platform: Macro chevrons and dark-shaded materials combining black upholstery and aluminum act as a showcase for the top-mounted capsules. The large, double-striped logo positioned at the center of Citroën Skate reinterprets the brand's original logo with its texture and material. Thus, it carries the torch of the 19_19 Concept, which previously embodied these features. Security systems hidden behind Citroën logos detect pedestrians, cars, bicycles, scooters or other objects on the road, achieving a completely safe and autonomous drive. Because the front and rear views of the Citroën Skate are exactly the same, the backlit Citroën logos are white on the front of the vehicle and red on the back. Thus, both the legal regulations are complied with and the travel direction of Citroën Skate is clearly stated to other users on the road. Citroën Skate is equipped with movable hydraulic cushions for comfortable and smooth placement of capsules as well as providing driving comfort during travel. Citroën Enhanced Comfort® logos remind us that whatever the vehicle type, Citroën is synonymous with comfort.

Goodyear tires

The wheels of the Citroën Skate, which revolutionized with their concepts and designs, and the wheels of the 19_19 Concept with dazzling design and extraordinary dimensions were designed and developed by Goodyear. Goodyear used multi-directional Eagle 360 wheels for the Citroën Skate. The combination of small electric motors gives the wheel a true 360° freedom of movement. Thus, it can travel in any direction and just like a computer mouse, it can spin in place and move into the smallest gaps without being bound by a particular direction of travel.

Open source: towards endless pods to meet a variety of uses

Other services that the capsules designed under Urban Collëctif can offer can also be considered. Thanks to the distinction between Citroën Skate and capsule, new applications can be developed and creativity with unique visions for individual and collective transportation can be unleashed. The realization of this vision depends on evaluating partnerships that go far beyond the automotive industry. Anything is possible thanks to the open source approach of Citroën Skate technology, which enables third parties to develop capsules that meet technical requirements. Local governments, public officials and companies can leverage Citroën Skate technology in public or private spaces such as airports, factories or convention centers by developing their own capsules for passenger transport, service or consumer product offerings, whatever their needs. Citroën Autonomous Transport Vision offers a wide range of flexible and affordable services. Thus, for example, if a local government aims to provide electrified and autonomous community services to reduce congestion in cities, it is possible to reduce operating costs by using a fleet of Citroën Skate. Many public services related to the daily lives of citizens such as transportation, health and waste can also be evaluated in this context. With the Citroën Skate fleet, local authorities can more effectively manage spikes in demand for transport during rush hour. Moreover, they can offer optional transportation during off-peak hours, as well as safe and noise-free travel options at night. The Citroën Skate fleet opens up new horizons in mobile, local and personal public services. It can also be used for medical applications, food distribution, food trucks and security purposes. Artificial intelligence provides the ability to predict where and when pods should be placed based on outdoor activities or individual preferences.
