The International Women's Symposium, in which women from different geographies shared their struggles for life, was held at the Mustafa Necati Cultural Center, hosted by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. At the opening of the symposium, President Soyer said, “We support women's struggle against rights violations and forming a union of forces. Our aim is to bring the violence against women, which is increasing day by day in our country and in the world, to the agenda once again and point out the solutions.”

The first event at the Mustafa Necati Cultural Center, opened by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, was the International Women's Symposium. Symposium gives hope to women's struggle

Underlining that the symposium is also the final event of the Women's Games Festival, launched by Ankara Art Theater in March, President Soyer said, “We are honored to host activists, politicians, lawyers and artists working in the field of women's rights from the world and our country. . Presenting the problems experienced by women to the audience through art, the Women's Games Festival attracted a great deal of attention. Despite the pandemic conditions, the large number of participation in the festival events held in Ankara, Bandırma, Çanakkale and Ayvalık gives hope to all of us on behalf of the women's struggle in our country.

We will find the solution to violence against women through a common struggle.

Stating that they support women's struggle against rights violations and forming a union of forces with the International Women's Symposium hosted by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Mayor Soyer continued his speech as follows:
“Our aim is to bring the violence against women, which is increasing day by day in our country and in the world, to the agenda once again and point out the solutions. Even if the women who are subjected to violence live in different countries and have different languages, religions or ethnicities; Their problems and struggles are very similar. Equality, justice, democracy and freedom are the basic and legitimate demands of women of the world. In this valuable symposium, women from different geographies such as Europe, Iran and Afghanistan will share their unique struggle experiences in their own countries. It will seek common methods of struggle.”

We need women's will in solving problems

Speaking at the opening of the symposium, CHP Women's Branch Chairman Aylin Nazlıaka said, “We women are connected to each other by invisible threads. We came together against the misogynist mentality. Giving up the Istanbul Convention, which is a lifeline for women, means giving up the right to life. As CHP, we implemented an article of the Istanbul Convention and offered a call center. We provide support on issues such as free legal support, psychological support, transportation support. Because none of us are as strong as all of us. We touch lives as we reach out. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality employs women everywhere in order to make progress in the local area for equality. The key project, women sailors, women drivers, mechanics, opened new branches in order to employ women, happily our Metropolitan Municipality is setting an example for Turkey," he said.

We reject patriarchal oppression

IYI Party Deputy Chairman Sibel Yanıkömeroğlu said, “Women's word is abundance. Her word is courage. It is not to destroy, but to glorify. We are determined to carry women's economic freedom, rights and position to the next level by touching women on the field. Gender equality needs to be resolved urgently in our country. Men and women are equal and have equal rights before work, family and the law. So-called excuses should not be made. We reject patriarchal oppression. Violence should not be normalized. These are one of the important solution points. Happy women will always raise a happier future and happy children.”

The first session of the symposium was moderated by CHP Ankara Deputy and PM member Gamze Taşcıer, with the participation of Lawyer Nazan Moroğlu, Afghan female activist Valvala Jalal, Iranian female activist Masih Alinejad and International University Women's Federation Vice President Başak Ovacık. At the symposium, in which the universality of women's struggle for rights and freedom was emphasized and women from different geographies conveyed their own unique struggles, women from Afghanistan, who had been going through hard times in the last days, were not forgotten either.

On the second day of the symposium, on October 16, under the moderation of Lawyer Feyza Altun, İzmir Village-Koop President Neptün Soyer, Afghanistan's first female governor Habiba Sarabi, Belgian woman activist and former senator Simone Susskind and Palestinian artist Reem Kelani will take place as speakers. The event at the end of the second day will be the theater play “A Woman Wakes Up” by Aysel Yıldırım at 20.00:XNUMX.
