Breast milk is defined as the most precious food that prepares babies for life. Every mother wants to feed her baby with her own milk, but women who become pregnant while breastfeeding are worried about whether there will be a problem for both their babies and their babies. Experts state that this situation is called “tandem breastfeeding” and that it does not cause problems for both mothers and babies, and that breastfeeding should continue in this process. From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Memorial Şişli Hospital, Op. Dr. Aysel Nalçakan gave information about the importance of breastfeeding and tandem breastfeeding.

Breast milk is an extremely important and irreplaceable nutrient in infant nutrition and contains all the energy and nutrients necessary for the healthy growth and development of the baby. It also contributes to the psychological development of the baby. It strengthens the bond between mother and baby, develops the sense of trust in babies. The baby's immune system is not yet fully developed in the first days and first years of life and needs to be protected by its mother. The mother provides this protection by breastfeeding her baby. In particular, the first critical contact should not be delayed immediately after birth, and the baby should be breastfed within 1 hour. However, one of every two newly born babies is not breastfed within one hour of birth, and this deprives them of antibodies and essential nutrients that will protect them from the risk of disease and death.

Moms are confused about whether to breastfeed while pregnant

As recommended by the World Health Organization, it is important to give only breast milk to the baby for 6 months after birth. If the child is breastfeeding, breastfeeding can continue until the age of 2 years. However, sometimes the time between two pregnancies can be short. In this case, mothers can be confused. Mothers may have questions such as "whether the baby should be breastfed while pregnant or not". Breastfeeding while pregnant is called tandem breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding does not cause premature birth

In the past years, it was thought that a pregnant woman should stop breastfeeding her baby, that the intrauterine baby could not develop when breastfeeding, or that increased oxytocin with stimulation of the nipple may cause pregnancy complications such as abortion and premature birth threat. However, studies have refuted the arguments that breastfeeding while pregnant causes miscarriage, premature birth, pregnancy complications and low birth weight. In other words, breastfeeding should be continued until 2 years of age.

Breastfed baby while pregnant is not poisoned

Due to the transformation of breast milk into colostrum, the baby may not like this taste and may stop sucking on its own, and the stool of the baby who continues to breastfeed may change. However, this is entirely due to the transformation of breast milk, so tandem breastfeeding does not poison the baby.

Health precautions to be taken during pregnancy should not be neglected

With tandem breastfeeding, the relationships of babies with each other and with their mothers are positively affected. In addition, the mother's guilt about having to wean her baby because she was pregnant disappears. Tandem breastfeeding mothers should definitely eat well and should not neglect pregnancy follow-ups.
