The USA and Greece renewed and expanded the Defense Cooperation Agreement for 5 years the previous day. In the text signed by the foreign ministers of the USA and Greece, Turkey was mentioned and it was noted that "it was threatened with war with the casus belli" and that the USA could confront Turkey for the first time in a written text.

The United States and Greece signed a critical agreement the previous day. First signed in 1990, the US-Greece Defense Cooperation Agreement was signed by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and his Greek counterpart, Nikos Dendias.

With the renewed and expanded agreement signed in front of the members of the press, the agreement, which will be valid until 2026, will expire if one of the parties withdraws from that date.

During the signing ceremony in Washington, Greek Minister Dendias stated that Turkey was threatening Greece with war with "casus belli". However, it was revealed that the Washington administration took the risk of opposing Turkey with such a text for the first time.

Making a statement on the subject, Minister of National Defense Hulusi Akar said, “Some countries are trying to gain a role in the Eastern Mediterranean in a way that exceeds their strength and stature. They see that making alliances within both the EU and NATO will divide both the EU's defense power and NATO.

What does the Greece US Defense Cooperation Agreement contain?

According to the updated defense cooperation agreement, the United States will invest and expand 4 existing military bases in Greece instead of opening new bases.

Greece's offer to establish a naval and air base on the island of Skyros was previously rejected by the United States.

With the agreement, the United States will also have access to Greek military bases. In addition, the areas where the US forces will exercise will be expanded.
