International contacts of Transport and Infrastructure Minister Adil Karaismailoğlu continue. Karaismailoğlu, who attended the United Nations Second Global Sustainable Transport Conference today after his meetings in Hungary, drew attention to environmentalist, domestic and national investment targets. Adil Karaismailoğlu, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, who attended the 5th Meeting of Ministers of Transport of the Turkic Council in Hungary yesterday, attended the United Nations Second Global Sustainable Transport Conference today.
In his speech here, Karaismailoğlu noted that in line with the UN Sustainable Development purposes, they developed strategies and policies aimed at providing innovative, sustainable, smart and integrated mobility that focuses on accessibility, covers all segments of society, and said, "In our investment plans, in addition to the United Nations 2030 agenda, the Paris Climate Change Agreement and We consider the goals of the EU Green Deal as our guide. We are working to bring an effective transportation system to our country with our 11th Development Plan, Transportation Master Plan, Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy and Action Plan, which we have prepared in accordance with these guidance documents.
Emphasizing that nearly 19 billion dollars has been invested in transportation and communication infrastructure in the last 170 years, Karaismailoğlu said that significant progress has been made for the establishment of a sustainable transportation system with national regulations and international cooperation.
WE AIM TO REDUCE EMISSIONS FROM RAILWAYS 75%
Underlining that access to transportation services is a right, and in order to create a network that eliminates differences at every step, Karaismailoğlu underlined that it is their first priority to deliver the service to the farthest corner of the country, and continued as follows:
“In our transportation ecosystem, which we have designed as an integrated, we integrate all modes with each other on the basis of efficiency. We started an investment mobilization in railways for a multimodal and balanced transportation infrastructure. In addition to the urban rail system lines, we are building new high-speed train lines and continuing the renovation works of our existing lines. Thus, we both increase efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions and move to a more environmentally friendly business. In 2035, we aim to reduce emissions from railways by at least 1990 percent compared to 75.”
Emphasizing that they did not ignore their investments in highways while investing in railways, Minister of Transport Karaismailoğlu said that by equipping Turkey with divided roads, they significantly reduced traffic congestion and prevented the increase in carbon emissions.
Karaismailoğlu said, “We have achieved approximately 19 million tons of carbon dioxide emission reduction on an annual basis with over 28 thousand kilometers of divided roads that we have built in the last 4 years,” said Karaismailoğlu. We are preparing the legal regulations and developing the necessary infrastructures for micro-mobility vehicles such as electric bicycles and e-scooters, which reduce carbon emissions and traffic in cities.”
OUR GOAL IS CARBON-FREE AIRPORT MANAGEMENT
Stating that the Ministry has done its part in order to achieve the emission reduction targets set by the International Maritime Organization in the maritime sector, which is called the "Blue Economy", Karaismailoğlu made the following assessments:
“With our Maritime Decarbonization project, which we designed to support green shipping, we will create a financial support mechanism for innovative technologies to be used for environmentally friendly transportation on our ships and ports. Since 2009, we have been giving green airport certificates to facilities that meet certain criteria at our airports. In addition, with our Carbon-Free Airport Project, we have been included with our accredited airports in the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program run by the Airports Council International. Our goal is to switch to carbon-free airport operations in the upcoming period. We have activated and expanded the Solar Power Plant Facilities to meet the electrical energy of airports from renewable energy sources. In addition, we are among the volunteer countries in the CORSIA (Carbon Offset and Reduction for International Aviation) Scheme of the International Civil Aviation Organization, which aims to reduce emissions from international flights and stabilize emissions at the 2020 level.”
Noting that as Turkey, they are trying their best as the Ministry to combat global climate change and establish a sustainable transportation system, Karaismailoğlu said, "From now on, we are working to minimize carbon emissions from transportation with our environmentalist, domestic and national investments, from incentives to projects based on green economy. We will continue to take steps that will include many new breakthroughs. We are ready to cooperate under the umbrella of the United Nations and in other platforms to establish an inclusive, sustainable and effective transportation system.”
