The first railway in Bosnia and Herzegovina was built within the framework of the Rumeli Railway project, which Sultan Abdulaziz Han planned to extend from Istanbul to Vienna.
Banya Luka – Dobrlyin railway line, which was built within the framework of the Rumeli Railway project, starting from Istanbul, passing through Edirne, Sofia, Nis, Sarajevo and Banya Luka and extending to Dobrlyin (settlement in Bosanski Novi Municipality), which was on the Austrian border at that time. was a first for Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnian archaeologist Adnan Muftarevic, who covered the subject in a post he made on Facebook, wrote that the 101,6 km long line began to be used as of December 24, 1872, and five locomotives were deployed to the warehouse in Banya Luka at that time.
The Rumeli Railway project could not be completed as it was originally planned and remained in the form of disconnected lines after the riots in the Balkans, the '93 war and the withdrawal of the contractor company from the railway construction. For this reason, the project could not reach Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Adriatic coast as envisaged by Sultan Abdulaziz.
The Banya Luka – Dobrlyin line suffered losses due to its inability to connect with Austria's railway networks and was closed in 1876.
