Marmaray, which connects the Asian and European sides under the sea, has carried nearly 8 million passengers, 7 times the population of Turkey, in the 600 years since it was put into service.

It has been 29 years since Marmaray, dreamed of by Sultan Abdülmecid, was put into service on October 2013, 8 with the participation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and many foreign statesmen.

Marmaray, which was put into service in the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic and called the “Project of the Century” with its 153-year history, hosts firsts in the world in terms of its technological infrastructure, economic size, momentum it has brought to railway transportation and many other innovations.

Carrying nearly 8 million passengers in the 600-year period, Marmaray united the continents at 5,5 stops for 5 years, and as of March 12, 2019, President Erdoğan attended a ceremony in Gebze.Halkalı started to serve at 43 stops on the line.

After this date, Gebze-Halkalı Marmaray, which is called the suburban line, has carried 8 times the population of Turkey and 7 times the population of Istanbul in the 40 years that have passed.

“It Has Become the Address of Fast, Comfortable and Uninterrupted Transportation”

In his written statement on the subject, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoğlu reminded that Marmaray was first mentioned by Sultan Abdülmecid Han in 1860, and said that for this reason, it was described as the "Project of the Century".

Reminding that Marmaray first came into operation with 29 stations in Kazlıçeşme-Ayrılık Çeşmesi section on October 2013, 5, Karaismailoğlu continued his words as follows: “As of March 13, 2019, Halkalı-Gebze was put into operation with 43 stations. Reaching 8 million passengers at the end of 600 years with the increasing number of passengers every year, Marmaray completed the 76-kilometer track in 108 minutes and became the address of fast, comfortable and uninterrupted transportation. Marmaray, which crosses the Asian and European continents in 4 minutes, has carried more than 7 times the population of Turkey with its number of passengers and approximately 40 times the population of Istanbul.”

Karaismailoğlu underlined that a new step has been taken towards passenger satisfaction in Marmaray, which carries approximately 450 thousand passengers a day, as of October 15, and stated that uninterrupted communication is provided at Yenikapı, Sirkeci and Üsküdar stations.

“Makes a Significant Contribution to the Turkish Economy”

Minister Karaismailoğlu said that Marmaray, which supports urban transportation in Istanbul and makes a difference with its environmentalist aspect, also makes significant contributions to the Turkish economy with the advantages it provides in freight transportation.

Expressing that domestic and international freight transportation has become easier and more active with Marmaray, which provides uninterrupted transportation from Beijing to London, Karaismailoğlu made the following statements: “Marmaray, Middle Corridor, where the first transit between China and Europe was carried out in November 2019. and dominates world trade via the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line. Marmaray Tube Pass, which is used by domestic freight trains as well as world trade, has become the primary choice of manufacturers and industrialists with the transit pass between Anatolia and Europe.

Cargoes, which were previously transported from the production centers of Anatolia to Derince by train, from Derince by ferry and then to the industrial facilities in Çorlu, now reach their destinations by passing through Marmaray without transferring or changing vehicles. In this way, the logistics costs of industrialists, manufacturers and exporters decrease and their competitiveness increases.”

"Aim; 1 Million Passengers a Day”

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Karaismailoğlu emphasized that the target in this area is 450 million passengers and tons of freight in Marmaray, which currently carries 1 thousand passengers a day.

Karaismailoğlu said, “The Marmaray project, whose borders pass through the two big cities of Turkey, increases its value in urban transportation with its trains, in intercity transportation with YHT, and in freight transportation with transit transit, both in Turkey and in the world.” he said.

1,5 Freight Trains Passed in 1.280 Years

According to the information received, a total of 17 freight trains, 2020 to Europe and 1,5 to Asia, have passed in the 678-year period since April 602, 1.280, when freight trains started to pass from Marmaray.
