SADDLERY

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Information Processing Directorate and Disabled Persons Directorate developed a special phone application for the visually impaired. With the KAYS application, which is a first in the history of IMM, visually impaired citizens will be able to visit the social facilities of the Directorate for the Disabled without needing anyone.

KAYS, an application that can be downloaded to phones, has a voice navigation feature. The KAYS application comes into play as soon as the phone on which the application is downloaded enters the campuses of the Directorate for the Disabled. It is enough for the visually impaired citizen to tell the KAYS application where he wants to go. The application takes the person to the area they want to go with the commands 'Turn right, turn left, continue straight'.

The pilot regions where the KAYS application is implemented are as follows:

Sultangazi ÖZGEM (Education Center for Individuals with Special Needs) closed area 114 M2, Bayrampaşa ÖZGEM closed area 1200 m2, Kağıthane ÖZGEM closed area 555 m2, Beyoğlu ÖZGEM closed area 3000 m2, Kartal ÖZGEM closed area 3400 m2, Kadıköy ÖZGEM closed area 2000 M2, Tuzla ÖZGEM closed area 6000 M2, Disabled Camp open area 76.646 m2, Esenyurt ÖZGEM open area 1500 m2, Bayrampaşa ÖZGEM open area 500 m2.

BRINGING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PEOPLE AND US

Visually Impaired Guide Yıldırım Tatlı stated that he is also 95 percent visually impaired and emphasized that thanks to this application, the gap between people with vision is closed. Stating that the application provides a great convenience to their lives, Yıldırım Tatlı said:

“Before the application, I was always taking someone who saw me or someone who knew the place, I couldn't go alone. Now, thanks to the application, I can go easily.”

Sociologist Çağatay Tuygun, who uses the application, said, "The best part of the application is that I can assign my position as a visually impaired person to another visually impaired friend. We can meet two disabled friends without needing anyone.”
