Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has launched a huge investment attack to renew the vehicle and pedestrian bridges over the streams, which were destroyed due to heavy rains in many districts of the city. Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyerstated that they will build new vehicle and pedestrian bridges at nearly 240 points within the scope of the works that will cost approximately 70 million liras. New vehicle and pedestrian bridges, the diameters of which will be built to reduce the risk of flooding, will provide safe and comfortable transportation for citizens.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality continues its efforts to prepare the city against floods that may be experienced due to the impact of the climate crisis. Accelerating infrastructure investments in many districts, the Metropolitan took action to renew the vehicle and pedestrian bridges that were destroyed or became unusable over the stream. Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç SoyerReferring to the troubles seen in the districts where the rainfall was effective in the flood disaster in İzmir on February 2, “Some of the streams overflowed in the flood disaster, the bridges and culverts on these streams were damaged, and transportation was disrupted. Our teams immediately intervened and did the necessary work. After this disaster, our Department of Science Affairs and Transportation Departments made determinations on transportation roads, streams and bridges in order to prevent floods that may occur in streams during heavy rains. With an investment of approximately 240 million liras, we have initiated new vehicle and pedestrian bridge investments at nearly 70 points. Thanks to the culverts that we have enlarged in diameter, the flow of the streams will be relieved, we will both prevent floods and provide safe and comfortable transportation for our citizens.
In the first phase, 31 culverts and 4 pedestrian bridges are being built.
Until the end of this year, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality will build 31 culvert vehicle bridges and 4 pedestrian bridges at the points where needed, especially in Menderes, Foça and Kiraz, which were affected by the flood disaster in the first place. The teams of the Department of Science Affairs started the construction of culvert vehicle bridges in the Dereköy, Kuyucak, Çatalca, Görece and Barbaros neighborhoods in the Menderes district. The works will be completed by the end of the year. In addition, the construction of a highway bridge over the Menemen Hasanlar Vehicle Bridge, the Ilıca Stream in the Bergama Fevzipaşa District and the Dikili Bademli District is continuing. In Seferihisar, the construction of 4 highway bridges will start over the Karakoç, Kocaçay and Ulamış streams.
Work has also started for the construction of 27 vehicle bridges.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality will build new vehicle bridges in the creeks that are too wide to make culverts. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Department of Transportation has started project studies to build a highway bridge over the stream at 27 points. By the end of this year, it is aimed to complete the project studies and start the construction of vehicle bridges. Highway bridges are designed according to the 100 and 500 year flow rates of the streams.
Teams work from four sides
Özgür Ozan Yılmaz, Head of Science Affairs Department of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, who gave information about the ongoing works at 6 points on the stream in the Kuyucak, Dereköy, Çatalca, Görece and Barbaros neighborhoods in Menderes, said that they will have renewed 31 culverts and 4 pedestrian bridges by the end of the year. Noting that they started the construction of vehicle and highway bridges in Bergama, Dikili and Menemen, an investment of 60 million liras was in question at the first stage, Yılmaz said, “Our bridge and culvert works will continue in 2022. We are making a serious investment to be prepared for precipitation and to prevent future flood disasters.”
