İBB subsidiary İGDAŞ is commissioning the world's second inspection robot, which will save millions of dollars and protect natural gas lines against earthquake risk, at the end of the year. Developed in cooperation with TÜBİTAK and with domestic facilities, the 'Robot Eye' will detect the malfunctions that occur or are likely to occur in the main distribution lines. İBB President Ekrem İmamoğlu described the success of producing a domestic inspection robot from social media; He announced it with the headline “It was the only one in the world, not now”.

İGDAŞ, one of the subsidiaries of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), develops new technologies to provide uninterrupted and reliable natural gas flow to 16 million Istanbul residents. The technology produced only by the USA in the world and which countries in need can only use by leasing is now available in Turkey. In the face of the high cost of robots inspecting gas lines, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality achieved great success and produced its own robot for the second time in the world with this technology.

The robot eye, implemented with the cooperation of İGDAŞ and TÜBİTAK RUTE (Rail Transportation Technologies Institute), will work like a detective in order to monitor the malfunctions that occur or may occur in the natural gas main distribution lines 24 hours a day. Developed with domestic facilities, the robot will not only provide great savings, but also prevent major financial losses that may occur.

DEVELOPED WITH LOCAL FACILITIES

İGDAŞ, which has more than 2 thousand kilometers of main transfer line throughout Istanbul, introduced the Robot Eye, which was developed with domestic facilities, to the public. The robot, which will scan the steel lines without interruption, will be ready for use by the end of the year. Robots that will travel 24 hours in these lines; It will be able to detect corrosion in advance, see geometric distortions due to environmental effects, and monitor the safety and health of its lines moment by moment with the three-dimensional maps it produces. Especially after the possible Istanbul earthquake, these robots will scan the lines very quickly and accelerate Istanbul's reaching gas again.

GREAT COST ADVANTAGE

Speaking at the promotional event organized with TÜBİTAK, İGDAŞ General Manager Mithat Bülent Özmen stated that the inspection robot will provide significant time savings and economic advantages, and said:

Our robotic monitoring rental cost on lines just 12 and 16 inches wide today is between $10 and $15 per kilometer. In other words, we are faced with a total cost of 5,5 to 8 million dollars each time just to monitor our broad lines at certain periods. Yet it costs us to manufacture our own tracking robot, roughly one-fifth of the cost of one-off rentals. The value and importance of the project should also be looked at from this perspective.

This is what long-term planning, preparation for earthquakes, and economical use of resources are all about," said Özmen, adding, "We are proud and happy for this beautiful example we have set. This is what it is like to ensure the comfort and safety of the citizens while serving them. Using technology while serving Istanbul is just that.

“THE ONE IN THE WORLD, NOT NOW”

Sharing the success of İGDAŞ and TÜBİTAK in producing domestic inspection robots on social media with the sentences “It was the only one in the world, not now”, İBB President Ekrem İmamoğlu said, “As İBB, we started the production of natural gas pipe inspection robot. These smart robots will roam under the city and inspect. Thanks to our subsidiary company İGDAŞ, TÜBİTAK and all the engineers who contributed to the study”.

FEATURES OF THE ROBOTIC SYSTEM

  • By means of its sensors, geometric distortion and metal losses on the steel line can be detected.
  • All detected defects; It can be reported in detail with location, depth, length, width and damage type information.
  • Thanks to the low-frequency radio waves emitted by the robot at intervals, the location of the robot can be determined over the ground with the hand devices to be used.
