Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Environmental Protection and Control Department will make sea cleaning more comprehensive and powerful with the new equipment it will acquire. The Metropolitan, which makes great efforts to prevent the pollution of the Mersin sea with regular inspections and cleaning activities, will collect the wastes on the sea surface with its new 'Seabin' vehicle.

The device also cleans oil and petroleum, especially microplastics.

Considering the danger posed by all types of waste in the sea, especially the microplastics created by human-made plastic wastes on the sea surface, the teams of the Maritime Services and Inspection Branch of the Metropolitan Municipality Environmental Protection and Control Department; focused on technology as well as personnel power for a more meticulous cleaning work. Continuing the trials of the Seabin sea surface cleaning vehicle, the teams will purchase the vehicle when the trial period is completed and increase its number over time.

The system, which is placed on the shore and provided with suction power by a pump, collects the wastes and oils in the sea. Seabin, which collects all kinds of garbage, oil and petroleum-derived chemicals around the place where it is fixed, can also capture microplastics as small as 2 mm. Capable of collecting about 6 kg of garbage a day, Seabin has a capacity of collecting approximately 2 tons of garbage per year.

Fixed units will be activated in the fight against wastes in the sea

Stating that they concentrate on technological equipment for a more comprehensive sea cleaning and conduct continuous research, Head of Environmental Protection and Control Department Dr. Bülent Halisdemir said, “We are working hard to keep our seas clean. In this effort, we take care to include technology in the work. Our president is very sensitive about this. He takes great care in this regard. Likewise, we do our best to keep our seas clean. For this purpose, we decided to purchase various technological devices. We are investigating,” he said.

Stating that they would prefer fixed units for the collection of microplastic wastes that are formed on the sea surface and which are very difficult to clean, Halisdemir said, “The types of pollution we call microplastics have started to appear on the sea surface in many places, especially in Çamlıbel Fisherman's Shelter where we are now. We are already fighting these microplastics, but we are trying to get stationary units and clean our sea here constantly,” he said.

“We are thinking of using it by disseminating it in a wide variety of places”

Explaining the features of the water surface cleaning device, Halisdemir said, “Seabin is a system that absorbs especially solid wastes and oils on the surface and removes them from the sea surface. He is working. It has a submersible pump inside. It vacuums the waste on the surface and returns clean water. It collects whatever waste is on it. We're doing experiments right now. If we are successful, we plan to expand and use it in various places, primarily in the port in Mersin. Because we will run it constantly and go to the way of cleaning it constantly. We are already doing these cleanings with our personnel, but by incorporating technology, we will fight to remove wastes such as oil from the sea surface," he said.
