Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç SoyerThe "International Mediterranean Cinemas Meeting", organized for the first time by the Metropolitan Municipality in line with the goal of making İzmir a cultural city, is being implemented within the scope of the Culture Summit. During the meeting, which will be attended by directors, producers and representatives of cinema institutions from Mediterranean countries, film screenings will be held in three venues. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is organizing the “International Mediterranean Cinemas Meeting” between 8-12 September. Organized as part of the Cultural Summit, the event will offer a movie feast to moviegoers on the Kadifekale floating platform, which will be pulled to the Quarantine dock in the evenings, as well as the Karaca Cinema, the art cinema of Izmir, and the French Cultural Center. In the shows, 2019-2021 feature films from Mediterranean countries' cinemas will be screened with Turkish subtitles. On the first day of the Izmir Mediterranean Cinemas Meeting, which was directed by Vecdi Sayar, after the Greek director Christos Nikou's "Apples" and Algerian-French director Maiwenn's "DNA" films, Palestinian director Ameen Nayfeh's will be on the Kadifekale floating platform at 21.00. With its presentation, the film "2021 Meters", Jordan's nominee for the 200 Oscars, will be screened. There is another Palestinian director's film on the September 9 program; Elia Suleiman's France-Palestine-Qatar-Germany-Canada-Turkey co-production “This Must Be Heaven” won the FIPRESCI award at the Cannes Film Festival. The other film to be screened on the same day is Fikret Reyhan's “Catlak”, which won numerous awards at the Istanbul and Antalya Film Festivals last year. The director will answer the questions of the audience after the movie that will be screened at the French Cultural Center.

South and North of the Mediterranean

Filmmakers from Mediterranean countries will hold a full-day meeting on September 9, where they will evaluate the role of cinema in ensuring intercultural peace in the Mediterranean, and the opportunities for cooperation between culture and art institutions and cinema sectors. Among the filmmakers who will attend the meeting are Eduart Makri, director of the Albanian Cinema Center, Irena Jelic, director of the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, Tsveta Dobreva, Secretary General of the Marseille Film Festival from France, Francesca Failla, actress and documentary director from Italy, Sam Lahoud, director of film festivals from Lebanon, Rabat Film Festival director from Morocco, Malak Dahmouni, Palestine director Ameen Nayfeh, Slovenia Film Center Nerina T. Kocjancic, Syrian Cinema Association director Kareem Abeed, Tunisian cinema veteran director and writer Ferid Boughedir, and producer Anne-Marie Boughedir, Turkey , directors Leyla Yılmaz, Bülent Öztürk, Reis Çelik, Tahsin İşbilen, producer Anna Maria Aslanoğlu, academician Aslı Favaro. The films to be screened on September 10 are Moroccan director Alaaddin Aljem's "Holy Saint", Leyla Yılmaz's "Don't Know", which won numerous awards at the Adana and Ankara Film Festivals last year, and France's Oscar nominee "Les Miserables" directed by Ladj Ly. and Algerian director Merzak Allouache's 12.00 film “Family”.

Henri Langlois award

Starting this year, Izmir Mediterranean Cinemas Meeting will present the Henri Langlois Award to a filmmaker from the Mediterranean for his contributions to the art of cinema. This award is also important in terms of announcing to the world that Henri Langlois, the founder of the French Cinematheque, is from Izmir. Langlois was a man of cinema who gave serious support to Turkish Cinematheque during its founding years. This year's winner of the Langlois Award is Merzak Allouache, one of the masters of Algerian cinema. In the last two days of the meeting, Spanish director Alejandro Amenabar's “In the Shadow of War”, Algerian-French director Mounia Meddour's “Papicha”, French director Robert Guédiguan's “Gloria Mundi”, Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania's “Sold Out The Skin” Man”, “The Synonyms” by Israeli director Nadav Lapid and “Lebanon Skies” by French director Chloé Mazlo.
