In the webinar organized by the Turkish Society of Anesthesiology and Reanimation (TARD) and Dräger Turkey, the positive effect of High Flow Oxygen Therapy on Covid-19 patients in the intensive care process was discussed.

The pandemic process and the emergence of different variants of the virus in the process once again brought up the importance of high-flow oxygen therapy. By providing an optimized respiratory support of high-flow oxygen therapy, especially to patients receiving Covid-19 treatment in intensive care; It is known that it accelerates the healing processes of patients. President of the Turkish Society of Anesthesiology and Reanimation Prof. Dr. Meral Kanbak and Prof. Dr. High Flow Oxygen Therapy and Its Uses were discussed in the webinar moderated by Mehmet Uyar and organized with the support of Dräger Medikal Turkey. Other speakers of the webinar are Assoc. Dr. Yasemin Tekdoş Şeker, Prof. Dr. Seda Banu Akıncı and Prof. Dr. Julide Ergil.

WHAT IS HIGH FLOW OXYGEN THERAPY?

This therapy method, also known as high-flow or high-flow oxygen therapy; It is a non-invasive respiratory support that delivers heated, humidified, oxygen-enriched air to patients. High-flow oxygen therapy has been used effectively to treat patients with moderate hypoxemic respiratory failure; it can provide respiratory support to these patients and also prevent later intubation. It provides improvements in oxygenation, respiratory rate, shortness of breath and patient comfort, and helps patients recover faster after extubation. This means better results and shorter ICU stays.

HIGH FLOW OXYGEN THERAPY IN ICU

In the webinar, which started with the opening of Dräger Medikal, Prof. Dr. Seda Banu Akıncı stated that in addition to Covid-19 patients, High Flow Oxygen Therapy can be widely used in intensive care units and the rate of intubating with this method has decreased.

HIGH FLOW OXYGEN THERAPY IN THE COVID-19 INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

While talking about the usage areas of High Flow Oxygen Therapy, it was stated that the most used area due to the pandemic was the Covid-19 Intensive Care unit. One of the webinar speakers, Assoc. Dr. Yasemin Tekdöş Şeker mentioned that the need for intubation of patients can be eliminated with high flow oxygen therapy in Covid-19 intensive care units. Assoc. Dr. Sugar; “In addition to providing better patient comfort with the humidified and heated air given to the patient, the desired treatment can be provided to the patients by giving the desired level of oxygen. With high-flow oxygen therapy, which can provide higher levels of oxygen compared to intubation, the recovery process of Covid-19 patients is accelerating.” used his statements.

OTHER AREAS OF USAGE: OPERATING ROOM

Also in the webinar, Prof. Dr. Jülide Ergil stated that high-flow oxygen therapy is also used in operating rooms. prof. Dr. Ergil, high-flow oxygen therapy, which is mainly used in intensive care units; He mentioned that it is an advantage in operating rooms as it requires less equipment for both patients and users, provides more patient comfort, and prevents the patient from being deprived of oxygen, especially during intubation.

“LIFE SAVING TREATMENT”

The HI-Flow Star product, in which Dräger provides high-flow oxygen therapy, which Dräger calls “life-saving therapy”, allows the patient to receive treatment without interruption during recovery, thanks to its rotating connectors that prevent disconnections. Thanks to the materials used to give the patient a more optimized respiratory support and its unique design, it adapts to the patient comfortably and thus skin irritations are reduced. In addition, the single-patient use feature minimizes the risk of infection during the Covid-19 period.
