Tunnel excavations in the construction of Narlıdere Metro, which will be one of the lifeblood of public transportation in İzmir, were completed this morning. The tunnel boring machine (TBM) connected the line between Fahrettin Altay and Narlıdere after a total excavation process of 14,5 kilometers. The historical moment when the second tunnel also came to light was reflected on the screens with the ceremony held at Narlıdere District Governor's Office.
President Soyer said, “We brought the Narlıdere Metro Line, which we bought at the level of 12 percent, to the level of 82 percent. Thankfully, there was light at the end of the tunnel today. In the 100th anniversary of our Republic, we will offer our Fahrettin Altay-Narlıdere Metro line to the service of our fellow citizens.
In line with the goal of bringing public transportation in Izmir to contemporary standards, the rail system investments of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality are continuing at full speed. While 12 percent of the construction works on the Fahrettin Altay-Narlıdere Metro line, which was 82 percent when Izmir Metropolitan Mayor Tunç Soyer took over the task, were completed, the second and last tunnel of 14,5 kilometers reached Narlıdere from Fahrettin Altay today. The historical moment when the tunnel boring machine brought the last tunnel to light was reflected on the screens with the ceremony held at Narlıdere District Governor's Office.
The ceremony was attended by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer, CHP İzmir Provincial President Deniz Yücel, Balçova Mayor Fatma Çalkaya, Güzelbahçe Mayor Mustafa İnce, Gaziemir Mayor Halil Arda, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Mustafa Özuslu, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Secretary Generals. Ertuğrul Tugay, Eser Atak, Barış Karcı, CHP district heads, headmen, council members and citizens attended.

Speaking at the ceremony, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer pointed out that they were moving at great speed on the Fahrettin Altay-Narlıdere Metro Line, 12 percent of which was completed when he took office, and said, “Today is a very important milestone on the service road we started in March 2019. we left behind. As of today, we have come to the end of the tunneling work of 14,5 kilometers in total in two directions. Soon, 82 percent of the Narlıdere metro construction will be completed, with the tunnel digging machine TBM bringing the last tunnel to light. At the same time, 35 percent of the station structures and 23 percent of the railway works have been completed in our subway construction. Approximately 3 thousand 300 meters of rail were laid. I would like to thank our contractor company, Gülermak, for their work. Hopefully, in the 100th anniversary of our Republic, we will put our Fahrettin Altay Narlıdere Metro Line into the service of our fellow citizens.
Pointing out that a total loan of 2,5 million Euros was provided for this project with an investment amount of 205 billion liras, Soyer said, “The 50 million Euro loan we have provided from the China-based Asian Infrastructure and Investment Bank for the construction of Narlıdere Metro, without any treasury guarantee, has been given to a local government in the world by the bank. It is the first infrastructure resource given.”
“Total line length will be 27 kilometers”
Providing information about the line, Soyer said, “Fahrettin Altay - Narlıdere Metro Line consists of 7 stations. With the commissioning of the line, the number of stations in our rail system network will increase to 24, and the total line length will increase to 27 kilometers. Those who take the metro from Bornova EVKA-3 will be able to travel directly to Narlıdere District Governor's Office. It is predicted that an average of 3 thousand passengers will be transported daily from EVKA-470 to Narlıdere. On the other hand, we will also commission a fully automatic car park with a total capacity of 498 vehicles, 207 at Balçova Station and 705 at Narlıdere District Governor's Office.
“We stand behind our word”
Saying that they will weave İzmir with iron nets with the Narlıdere – Fahrettin Altay, Buca Metro, Karabağlar – Gaziemir Metro, Otogar-Kemalpaşa Metro, Çiğli Tram and New Girne – Örnekköy Tram they are running simultaneously, Soyer concluded his speech as follows:
“We have said at every opportunity that we will weave İzmir with iron nets. We keep our word. We will spend 26 billion liras for these six rail system projects. We do this with the resources we have created, thanks to the strong financial infrastructure of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. We do it with the great power we get from you. I would like to thank my teammates and hardworking workers for their great efforts in the realization of these most important projects of İzmir. Thankfully, the light at the end of the Narlıdere Metro tunnel appeared today. It appeared thanks to the sweat of your brow. Thank you, exist. I wish our Narlıdere Metro project to be beneficial to all İzmir residents and our country.”
“He would have liked to have the support of the government”
Answering the questions of the journalists after the ceremony, President Soyer said that they will continue their rail system investments with their own resources. Soyer said, “Our state and government do not have a one-meter tunnel in İzmir. As we have done so far, we will continue with our own resources and external financing resources. Together with our Narlıdere Metro line, we are increasing our metro lines to 27 kilometers. We are also proud of that. There are 6 rail system projects that we carry out simultaneously, 4 of which are metro. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is doing all this with a huge investment of 26 billion in total. We are talking about an investment of 3 billion Euros. He would have liked to have the support of our government, and the government to be involved in studies that will contribute to the metro network in İzmir”.
ABOUT NARLIDERE METRO
Despite the pandemic, the works in Fahrettin Altay-Narlıdere Metro, which was 12 percent when Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer took office, continued uninterruptedly. A 125 million euro loan has been provided for the project. 73 percent of the construction has been completed. A 12-meter tunnel was opened. Excavations were completed with Fahrettin Altay in the first tunnel in the direction of Narlıdere District Governorship Station. The 25-kilometer Fahrettin Altay-Narlıdere metro line consists of 7.2 stations.
With this line, the Metropolitan Municipality will increase the number of stations in the light rail system network to 24 and the length of the rail system to 186,5 kilometers. With the completion of the works, those who take the metro from Bornova EVKA-3 will be able to go directly to Narlıdere District Governorship. The metro line will be completed in 2022.
