Couples should respect each other's privacy

Underlining that no one is obliged to experience a sexual behavior that they do not like, Uzm. Dr. Ebru Soylu said, “Anxiety about unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases prevent people from having healthy and satisfying sexuality. It is important to take precautionary measures in this regard. Misconceptions about sexuality, if any, should be overcome by talking and sharing together. One person's sexual intimacy with another person may involve different behaviors for everyone. For this reason, people should talk among themselves about the sexual behaviors they like, enjoy and want or dislike.

Sex therapy should be done by trained people.

Emphasizing that sexual therapy is a kind of cognitive behavioral treatment applied to individuals or couples with sexual problems by experienced psychiatrists and psychologists trained in sexual problems, Uzm. Dr. Ebru Soylu said:

“Sex treatments, psychotherapy sessions are held in practice or hospitals. Sex therapy is administered by experienced psychiatrists and psychologists who have received training on this subject. If the person applying for sexual therapy has a sexual partner, it is recommended that they apply for the treatment together with their sexual partner. Because this increases the success of the treatment even more. First of all, sexual history and sexual problem history are taken by interviewing both partners separately. After the areas of the problem are determined, the treatment goals are determined together with the couple. The frequency, duration and basic principles of the meetings are determined. Anatomy and physiology of sexual regions, functioning of sexual responses, false sexual beliefs, concept of sexuality are explained. Afterwards, various homework assignments are given and sexual therapy is applied.”

The influence of psychological and social conditions is significant

Pointing out that human behavior and sexuality are affected by physical, psychological and social conditions, Uzm. Dr. Ebru Soylu said, “Sexuality is not limited to the genitals. There are feelings, thoughts, and settled beliefs about sexuality. It is known that established beliefs can often be wrong. The physical and psychological characteristics of the person or the interactions of bilateral relations may be effective in the emergence of sexual problems and disorders. Naturally, the treatment of sexual problems may vary depending on the factors that play a role in its formation. By interviewing the person, the factors that reveal the problem and cause it to settle are examined together.

Problems arising from lack of education are frequently encountered

Stating that sexual dysfunctions that can be treated with sexual therapy are vaginismus, premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, dyspareunia (painful sexual intercourse in women), sexual desire disorders in men and women, arousal disorders in women, orgasm disorders in men and women. Dr. Ebru Soylu continued as follows:

“However, when we look at the sexual problems experienced in our country, sexual problems are frequently seen in individuals or couples with a healthy body and psychological structure due to problems arising from lack of sexual education, lack of sexual knowledge, insufficient sexual experience, wrong beliefs about sexuality, and upbringing. Sexual problems that have arisen for these reasons can also be treated by giving a few sessions of counseling.

Treatment takes 8-12 sessions on average.

In the world and in Turkey, many of the vaginismus and premature ejaculation cases have been successfully treated with sexual therapy for years; Pointing out that other sexual dysfunctions such as sexual reluctance, erectile dysfunction in men and arousal and orgasm disorders in women are also largely treated. Dr. Ebru Soylu said, “Although there are changes according to the type of sexual problem and the problem couple, sexual treatments take 8-12 sessions on average. Sometimes, there may be cases that get better in a short time with one or two interviews, or there may be cases where the treatment should take a year or two," he concluded.
