The second Liebherr LR 13000 model crawler mobile crane was installed and commissioned at the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NGS) construction site. 5 of the 2 cranes of the same model found around the world were put into service at the construction site of Turkey's first nuclear power plant. With the help of a crane, the second layer of the inner protection shell was mounted in the reactor building of the second power unit and the support beam of the reactor shaft was installed, and this year's basic construction and assembly works were completed.
The Liebherr LR 13000, the world's most powerful conventionally designed crawler crane, can lift loads up to 3000 tons. The crane, whose main area of use is the construction of power plants and other large industrial facilities where the lifting of heavy and oversized equipment is constantly required, also has the ability to move with a load attached to the boom. Despite its large dimensions, this giant crane is the most economical crane in the world in terms of transportation, thanks to the individual weights of the individual components of up to 70 tons.
AKKUYU NUCLEAR INC. Sergei Butckikh, First Deputy General Manager and Director of NGS Construction, said in a statement: “While planning the implementation of important construction activities, it was decided to bring a similar Liebherr LR 13000 crane, which is currently in service in the first power unit. Another crane of the same model was brought to the Akkuyu NPP construction site due to the need to ensure the assembly of large-sized cargo and structures at the construction sites of the second and third power units. The crane was located in Italy before being transported to the Akkuyu NPP site and was shipped from there to the Eastern Cargo Terminal by sea. As the unique lifting structure was installed in a limited space surrounded by multiple tower cranes, this process required additional work from the installation team made up of Russian, Turkish and Dutch experts.”
The first Liebherr LR13000 crane was installed at the Akkuyu NGS construction site in August 2019. In the first power unit with the help of a crane, the largest components of the equipment and constructions, such as the reactor pressure vessel, the core holder pressure vessel, the support and thrust beams, the second and third layers of the inner protection shell, were assembled.
