Although fatigue is a very common and important problem in cancer patients, treatment methods for the treatment of this problem are quite limited. Anadolu Medical Center Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, "According to the research carried out with 436 patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in the USA, it has been shown that active music applied for 20-30 minutes in complementary medicine practices contributes to the reduction of fatigue in patients."

Stating that cancer-related fatigue is seen in approximately 90 percent of patients receiving cancer treatment, Anadolu Medical Center Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, “This is an even more important problem, especially in hospitalized patients. The definition of this is explained as a condition that bothers the patient, lasts continuously, and which the patient describes as 'fatigue'. Patients in this situation stay in the hospital for a longer period of time or these patients need to be hospitalized repeatedly. This distress causes patients to carry out their daily activities and their health-related quality of life to deteriorate, ultimately affecting overall survival. About 60 percent of the patients think that the interventions for fatigue complaints are not sufficient.

Music therapy is applied in complementary medicine practices

Emphasizing that music therapy is used in complementary medicine practices in approximately 50 percent of the centers affiliated to the National Cancer Institute in the USA, Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, “Here, trained music therapy specialists use music-based applications for therapeutic purposes. These music applications can be considered active or passive. In active music treatments, patients sing, play musical instruments, write lyrics or choose musical pieces to be listened to. After choosing these works, they share their thoughts on the selection of the songs.”

Active music therapy reduces fatigue associated with cancer treatment

Stating that the last study showing that music is beneficial to patients was done at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal, “The research was carried out with 436 patients. These patients were patients with blood cancer, breast cancer, digestive system cancer and gynecological cancers. Active music therapy was applied to 360 of these patients and passive music therapy was applied to 76 of them. The duration of these treatment applications is limited to 20-30 minutes. Afterwards, the fatigue of the patients was evaluated. In this study, it has been shown that active music therapy contributes to the patients' feeling of well-being and reducing their fatigue at a higher rate compared to passive music therapy.
