Youth World Orienteering Championship will be held between 4-10 September with the support of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality. The championship, which will be held with the participation of 31 athletes from 270 countries, will start from Izmit City Square.

YOUTH WORLD ORIENTIRING CHAMPIONSHIP

The launch of JWOC 2021 Junior World Orienteering Championship was held at Maide Restaurant. Kocaeli Deputy Governor Ali Ada, Deputy Mayor of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Yaşar Çakmak, Turkish Orienteering Federation President Hacer Akyüz, International Orienteering Federation Vice President Tatyana Kalender, World Youth Orienteering Championship Event Director and Turkish Orienteering Federation Foreign Relations Board. President Gökhan Ünal, Kocaeli Amateur Sports Clubs Federation President Murat Aydın, Kocaeli Youth and Sports Provincial Director İbrahim Aktürk and branch managers, Head of Youth and Sports Services Department Şemsettin Yıldırım attended.

31 ATHLETES FROM 270 COUNTRIES

With the support of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Youth and Sports Services Department, JWOC 2021 Youth World Orienteering Championship will be organized by the Turkish Orienteering Federation and the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The organization, in which a total of 31 people will participate, including 270 athletes and technical teams from 349 countries, will start from the city center of Izmit. The award ceremony of the championship, which will last for 7 days, will be held on September 10 in Gebze.

“WE ARE HOSTING AN IMPORTANT EVENT”

Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Yaşar Çakmak stated that as Kocaeli, they are very happy to host the Youth World Orienteering Championship, and said, “As Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, we are proud to host the Youth World Orienteering Championship, which could not be held in 2020 and was postponed to this year due to the pandemic. Our friends started their work months ago in order to host you in Kocaeli in the best way possible. As a result of the meetings held with the officials of the International World Orienteering Federation, the tracks, arenas, starting and finishing points were determined with care. Many more technical details such as transportation, map printing, timing, event center emerged as a result of joint work. 2021 athletes from 31 countries will participate in the 270 Youth World Orienteering Championship to be held in our city. As you can see, we are organizing another very comprehensive and well-attended championship in Kocaeli. I sincerely believe that we will come out of this organization with a clear conscience, thanks to the diligent and devoted work of our federation officials and friends.”

“CORTAGE AND OPENING CEREMONY”

Stating that the championship will take place on the tracks determined in Izmit and Gebze between 4-10 September, Çakmak said, “Our athletes will participate in the Sprint Race in the city center of Izmit, and in the Middle Distance qualifying and final race in Gebze Mudarlı. Then, the Long Distance and Relay Race stages will be held in Gebze Denizli. On Saturday, September 4, we will hold a cortege and opening ceremony at our city square in the center of Izmit. In our opening ceremony, first of all, our athletes will form a cortege in the city center where they will carry the flags of their own countries. With the entrance of the athletes to the Izmit City Square, the athletes of each participating country will be presented and will place their own country flags on the areas near the stage. At the opening ceremony, which we plan to turn into a visual feast, stage shows will be held in order to introduce Turkish culture to our guests from abroad.

“KOCAELİ WAS ALWAYS WITH US”

Stating that Kocaeli is hosting an important event, Turkish Orienteering Federation President Hacer Akyüz said, “We were very excited when we applied for the Youth World Championship. Our joy increased even more when it was determined that it will be held in Turkey in 2020. Then our talks started. The unity of the institutions and the support of the local government are very strong here. Now we have come to the final stage of this organization. As of today, our organization has started. 7 countries came here for camping. 31 athletes from 270 countries will compete for the championship. A serious work process took place in Kocaeli. I would like to thank Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality for their support.”

“Youngsters are waiting for the race with four eyes”

Expressing that young people are looking forward to the race, International Orienteering Federation Vice President Tatyana Kalender said, “Orienteering is a difficult sport. Kocaeli is a very suitable city for this sport. Its nature is suitable for this sport. This race is very important for young people. Young people are impatient because it could not be done in 2020 due to the pandemic. We are all looking forward to this race. The eyes of the whole world will be on these races. I would like to thank those who contributed to the organization and Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality for their support. I wish success to all our athletes in the races," he said.

“KOCAELİ IS A CITY OF SPORTS”

Pointing out that Kocaeli is a sports city, Deputy Governor Ali Ada said, “Youth World Orienteering Championship could not be held in 2020 due to the pandemic. Youth World Orienteering Championship will be held in our city this year. It is important for us that the organization, which will be held between 4-10 September, will be held in Kocaeli. It will be an indication that Kocaeli is not just an industrial city, but a sports city. In this context, we care that the event takes place in our city. He congratulates all the staff, especially our Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tahir Büyükakın, who contributed. I wish success to our athletes,''he said.

Orienteering, which includes finding directions with the help of maps, is a sport against time. Although it can be done in different terrain conditions, this sport is usually practiced in forest areas. Athletes try to reach the targets indicated on the map of the competition area given to them, respectively and as soon as possible.
