The importance of lens feature in cataract disease

Ophthalmology and Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Mete Açıkgöz gave information about the subject. Cataract is generally known as a disease of old age. However, it is a disease of the lens of the eye that can occur in younger and even infants due to some systemic diseases, drugs used and other reasons, including congenital. Since the transparent lens loses its transparency and transmits less light, patients come with the complaint of seeing less than a curtain on my eyes.

Since there are different types of cataracts, patients may come with different complaints. For example, some patients apply to the doctor with different complaints such as I see far less, but I can see up close better, some of them are more affected by cars and spotlights at night, some patients see worse during the day and better at night. The only treatment for cataract is surgery. It is not possible with medicine and other solutions for now. Because it is not possible to open a deteriorated and darkened lens with any medicine. The most technical work done in surgery is to replace the defective lens with a new one. The lens (lens) is placed inside the eye. In other words, a new part is replaced with a new one. Since it is placed in its original natural place, it is fixed and solid in place, so it cannot be displaced by movement, bending, sports, etc.

Of course, provided that the patient's eye structure is suitable and the surgery is done appropriately and correctly. The feature of the lens to be placed in the surgery is much more important. The patient's age is the most important consideration in this regard. Then, the profession of the patient, the shape of the cataract, the structure of the eye, the strength of the macula in the retina are very effective in our decision. If the eye and the patient are suitable, our first choice is multidimensional trifocal (colloquially called smart lens) lenses. It shows the near, middle and far distances without interruption and the patient does not need to wear glasses at any distance. If the eye is not suitable, monofocal lenses are attached to the patient. These lenses show only the distance and the patient uses glasses for close reading. There are also long and medium distance lenses, and we recommend it to patients who cannot use trifocals. It shows the distance and medium (60-80 cm) distance without glasses. Before the operation, your doctor will enlighten you on this issue. Your specialist will make the final decision.
