Karaismailoğlu said, “To clean the oil, the YAPRACIK and ALTUĞ 1100 tugboats equipped/loaded with 3 meters sea barrier, 2000 oil collection scrapers, 700 absorbent pads, 7 meters absorbent sausage barrier, 2 floating portable storage tanks and Cyprus Coastal Safety General Directorate' Extinguishing 10 Tugboats belonging to the company started to be used”.

Adil Karaismaioğlu, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, made assessments on sea pollution originating from Syria.

Karaismailoğlu stated that the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure was vigilant so that the oil pollution caused by the leakage in the fuel oil storage tank in the Electricity Power Plant in Baniyas province on the Syrian border does not damage the TRNC coasts.

Expressing that the TRNC asked for help from Turkey when the pollution threatened the coasts, Karaismailoğlu said, “In line with my instructions, an emergency response was initiated by the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs to prevent oil pollution from damaging the TRNC coasts”.

Providing information about the equipment used, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismaioğlu said, “To clean the oil; Equipped/loaded with 1100 meters sea barrier, 3 oil collection scrapers, 2000 absorbent pads, 700 meters absorbent sausage barrier, 7 floating portable storage tanks, YAPRACIK and ALTUĞ 2 tugboats and EXTINGUISHING 10 Tugboats belonging to the General Directorate of Cyprus Coastal Safety will be used. started,” he said.

“SEA VEHICLES ARE IMMEDIATELY DISPATCHED TO THE REGION”

Karaismailoğlu stated that the Ministry was authorized on 30 August within the scope of the emergency response works carried out under the coordination of Vice President Fuat Oktay, and that the emergency response companies' marine vehicles and pollution response equipment were immediately dispatched to the region.

Karaismailoğlu noted that two officials from the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs were transferred to the TRNC by the first plane to ensure the necessary coordination with the TRNC units and to direct the marine pollution operation. Said it was given.

SEYİT ONBAŞI AND NENE HATUN SHIP ARE PLANNED TO BE IN THE REGION ON SEPTEMBER 3

Karaismailoğlu noted that the SEYİT ONBAŞI Oil Recovery Ship, operated by the General Directorate of Coastal Safety of the Ministry, set off from Istanbul on 30 August, and the NENE HATUN Emergency Response Ship on 31 August to arrive in the TRNC. He also announced that they are planning to be in the region.

Minister of Transport Karaismailoğlu emphasized that the Vatan tugboat belonging to the Cyprus KEGM and the Bayrak support ship joined 31 tugboats in the morning of 3 August in order to assist the ships in the region in operations.

TWO TUGS ARE HOLDING IN ALIAGA AND MERSIN

Pointing out that Vice President Faut Oktay is closely following the process, Minister Karaismailoğlu said, “Two tugboats in the administrative area of Aliağa Port Authority and Mersin Port Authority are kept ready to be transferred to the region with their oil pollution response equipment. Various oil pollution response equipment at our Ministry's National Maritime Safety Center is sent to the Iskenderun Bay by road.

DETECTED POLLUTION IS INTERVENED

Emphasizing that a small oil pollution detected 7.5 nautical miles off Zafer Burnu was intervened with the marine vehicles and equipment sent to the region, Karaismailoğlu continued his assessment as follows:

“No pollution was found during the surveillance made by sea vehicles for the pollution notification at 2 different points reported by the weather elements. While the necessary negotiations are being carried out with international organizations and non-governmental organizations regarding the pollution occurring in Syria, the Ministry has started to intervene both with observation and on the pollution detected on the sea surface with 4 tugboats and 1 support ship and various pollution response equipment sent to the region. In the region; The pollution is monitored with the images and satellite images provided by the air elements of the relevant institutions, and it is understood that the spilled oil has spread quite widely in the sea area between the TRNC and Syria. Most of the fuel oil spilled from the storage tank of the power plant has already washed up on the shores of Syria.”

Pointing out that according to the data obtained from satellite images, pollution has been observed in an area of more than 30 million decares as of August 1, Minister Karaismailoğlu said that there is no information about the intensity of pollution in the images.

THE POLLUTION CONTAINING THE COASTS OF TURKEY AND TRNC IS NOT THE ISSUE

Karaismailoğlu said, “Pollution is not at the same intensity in each area, but moves in groups. However, oceanographic conditions, especially sea water temperature, and the derivative of oil affect the state and movement of pollution in the sea. Currently, there is no pollution contaminating the coasts of our country or the coasts of the TRNC. It is considered that intense pollution clusters, which reach approximately 15 nautical miles from the TRNC, move to the northeast, depending on the meteorological conditions in the region, and may come towards the Iskenderun Bay.
