Nobel Prize-winning Turkish Scientist Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar gave important messages about the increasing opposition to vaccination all over the world. Meeting with the professors working on vaccine and drug development under the roof of TÜBİTAK COVID-19 Turkey Platform, Prof. Sancar said, “Being anti-vaccine is an illogical attitude. Even if the law does not force it, it is necessary to be vaccinated.” said.

Coming to Turkey as TÜBİTAK's guest of honor for TEKNOFEST, the world's largest aviation, space and technology festival, Sancar met with the TÜBİTAK COVID-19 Turkey Platform. Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank announced the historic meeting with a video message he shared on social media. Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır, President of TÜBİTAK Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, Deputy Chairman of TÜBİTAK MAM Dr. Osman Okur, TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute Director Burcu Özsoy, TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM) Gene Engineering and Biotechnology Institute Director and COVID-19 Turkey Platform Coordinator Prof. Dr. Saban Tekin joined.

At the meeting, Prof. from Istanbul University, one of the professors operating within the platform. Dr. Ahmet Gul from Ankara University, Prof. Dr. Hakan Akbulut and Dr. Mehmet Altay Ünal from Bilkent University, Prof. Dr. İhsan Gürsel from METU, Prof. Dr. Mayda Gürsel was also present.

Prof. from Izmir Biomedicine and Genem Center. Dr. Mehmet Inan from Ege University, Assoc. Dr. Mert Döşkaya from Medipol University, Assoc. Dr. Mustafa Güzel, from Boğaziçi University, Prof. Dr. Nesrin Özeren from Dicle University, Assoc. Dr. İbrahim Halil Yıldırım from Selçuk University, Prof. Dr. Osman Erganiş from Başakşehir University Prof. Dr. Serdar Durdağı and Assoc. Dr. Erkan Ertürk was the other participant of the meeting.

Making evaluations after the meeting titled “Developing Together and Succeeding Together”, Sancar said, “You have heard about vaccine studies in Turkey. How do you find the point where vaccine studies have reached?” “I found it very successful. I knew about some of them, but I didn't know in such detail. I really liked that they did great things in 3 years and trained good students.” said.

When asked if he had a message about anti-vaccine, Sancar said, “I don't know what to say because I think being anti-vaccine is an illogical attitude. So it doesn't make sense. Being anti-vaccine is not a rational attitude.” gave the answer.

Noting that the university he works at does not accept those who are not vaccinated, Sancar said, “I don't know if Turkey complies with the laws. But even if the law doesn't enforce it, you need to be vaccinated or you're putting someone else in danger. You have no right to this." said.
