With the works of Ünye Municipality, a new era is being entered in Ünye Castle, which is one of the most mysterious structures of the Black Sea Region with its 2-year history.

1. and 2. The work, which was prepared for the 2-meter-long large corridor in the Ünye Castle, whose stage restoration works were completed and the cleaning works in the 250 corridors were completed, and can be visited by the rail system, received approval from the Samsun Cultural Heritage Preservation Board.

Haci Bayram Veli University Archeology Department Head Prof. Dr. Yücel Şenyurt and Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Faculty of Architecture, Department of Restoration faculty member Prof. Dr. Zeynep Ahunbay then met with Ünye Mayor Hüseyin Tavlı and made evaluations.

It will be the first in Turkey

A project has been prepared for the 250-meter-long large corridor in Ünye Castle, whose cleaning works have been completed, that tourists can visit by rail system. The project, which was approved by the Samsun Cultural Heritage Preservation Board, draws attention as it is the first study in Turkey.

Chairman Tavlı, “We Make Ünye Castle a Remarkable Destination”

Noting that they are working to make the Ünye Castle a remarkable destination by implementing different projects, Ünye Mayor Hüseyin Tavlı said in his statement; “We started the cleaning works in our corridors in December 2019. The small corridor ended at 26 meters. The opinion that this place was mostly used as a cistern or material storage was dominant. The other and large corridor extends up to 250 meters. The cleaning works were completed here, and at the end, the water well was reached in an undisturbed state. Our esteemed teachers have two thoughts about this water well. The first of these is that it was used to avoid dehydration during the war. The other thought is that it was used for religious rites and blessings before the Christian era.

Chairman Tavlı, “We will implement a project that will be the first in Turkey”

Noting that they are working on a different concept to bring Ünye Castle to tourism, Ünye Mayor Hüseyin Tavlı said, “We first prepared and presented a project to the Samsun Cultural Heritage Preservation Board to create walking stairs and ramps from the entrance gate of our Ünye Castle. This project was approved on May 27, 2021. Again, we prepared and presented a project for the use of a rail system in order to descend to the bottom of the 250-meter-long large corridor. This project, which we submitted on July 28, 2021, was approved. Our project, which will transport the visitors to the bottom of the corridor by rail system, also has the feature of being the only one in Turkey with this feature. Noting that we are trying to bring our Ünye Castle to tourism and open it to visitors in a short time, I would like to thank my valuable teachers and team.”

prof. Dr. Şenyurt, “We Want to Make Ünye the Starting Point of Black Sea Archeology”

Stating that they will work to make the Ünye Castle, the starting point of the Black Sea archeology extending to the east, Hacı Bayram Veli University Archeology Department Head Prof. Dr. Yücel Şenyurt said, “We will provide all kinds of scientific support. We had a very productive meeting. We will bring a very beautiful archaeological site to Ünye and Ordu. Good luck now,” he said.

prof. Dr. Ahunbay, “President Tavli's Effort is Admirable”

Expressing that the efforts of Ünye Mayor Hüseyin Tavlı and his team in bringing Ünye Castle to tourism are admirable, ITU Faculty of Architecture Department of Restoration lecturer Prof. Dr. Zeynep Ahunbay said, “It is very important to reveal the secrets of Ünye Castle, which has been a legend since my childhood, to bring it to tourism and to research it scientifically. We give them all kinds of support in this regard and we will continue to do so.” Said.
