Ocean waves are on their way to becoming a new player in the field of renewable energy. However, the fact that a technology that effectively transforms this natural resource into energy and is resistant to the ocean environment has not been developed until today has prevented the conversion of waves into clean energy. According to the article published in the journal Applied Energy and written by Han Xiao (Beihang University), an innovation that makes the technology possible has been revealed.
The studies carried out by the engineers of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Terchnology (RMIT) in Australia and the researchers of Beihang University in China are about to reveal the technology that can convert wave motions into energy in an economical way. The innovation product is based on a twin turbine assembly.
Professor Xu Wang, head of the research team, states that wave energy is an extremely reliable and promising source of clean and renewable energy. Indeed, wind power and solar power, which currently dominate the renewable energy market, vary by geographic region, but are only available for 20-30 percent of the year. However, wave energy can be used for an average of 90 percent of a year.
The prototype currently available has largely overcome the technical problems that have prevented the use of such energy to date. If it is developed a little more, thanks to this technology, the advantages of a brand new economic, clean and renewable energy source will be presented to humanity.
