As part of the personnel training program for Akkuyu NPP, St. Turkish students who completed the master's program at St. Petersburg the Great Polytechnic University (SPbPU) were entitled to receive their master's degrees. All 2019 Turkish students who registered for the first graduate program in 22 successfully completed the program, while 12 received honors.
During the two-year education period, students received education in the fields of “Heat Energy and Thermal Engineering” as well as “Electrical Energy and Electrical and Electronics Engineering” at the historic campus of SPbPU, which was established in 1899 and is considered one of the best technical universities in Russia. . Turkish students who received undergraduate degrees from the departments of "Heat Energy and Heat Engineering", "Electrical Energy Engineering and Electrical Engineering", "Nuclear Energy Engineering" and "Chemical Technology" from universities in Turkey were accepted to the program. Admission to the master's program was based on the results of the interview conducted in English with the faculty members at SPbPU. While the training of the subjects related to the profession was given in English, the students who will be the employees of AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş in the future also received Russian language training.
AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş will employ SPbPU graduates in September 2021.

Tuğçe Kurt, Mersin, Çukurova University Mechanical Engineering (Mersin) Bachelor's degree, SPbPU master's degree in 2021: “The construction of the country's first nuclear power plant is a big step for Turkey. Being a part of this step is very proud for myself, my family and my friends. The fact that the Akkuyu NPP project is being carried out in Mersin, where I was born and grew up, also makes me happy. I am very confident that both the country and Mersin will be stronger with this project. Electricity lights our homes, our city streets, it powers industrial companies, most importantly, nuclear power is also environmentally friendly and a reliable source for large quantities of electricity.”
Pakize Ayşe Cigal, Ankara, Hacettepe University Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Energy Engineering (Ankara), SPbPU master's degree in 2021: “I always wanted to study abroad so after graduating from my university in Turkey, I wanted to continue my education in different countries to continue my education. I researched their program. I had no trouble getting used to the Russian education system, but unlike Turkey, the exams in Russia were oral. In general, the system encourages the student to learn, not memorization. Turbocompressor, heat transfer, combined heat and power plant operating principles, numerical analysis – all these were not easy topics, but it was a lot of fun working on them.”
Ferit Kamil Sadak, Ankara, Atılım University Energy Systems Engineering (Ankara) Bachelor's degree, SPbPU master's degree in 2021: “The construction project of Akkuyu NPP and the personnel training program for the nuclear power plant are of great importance for our country. It was a great opportunity for an energy graduate engineer like me to participate in this program, both in terms of getting higher education, working in a prestigious project and constantly improving professionally. It is an invaluable experience for me to witness and take part in the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Turkey, putting it into operation and producing electricity. Turkey is foreign-dependent in terms of energy, which causes the country's current account deficit to be high. Nuclear energy will also solve this problem.”
Yunus Emre Tayfun, Adana, Iskenderun Technical University, Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, SPbPU master's degree in 2021: “As our training coincided with the peak time of the coronavirus pandemic, our applied training and internships were done online, but there was discipline everywhere. The courses were given in strict accordance with the schedule. The teachers reminded us that the nuclear power plant is where we will always work, that we must do our work as seriously, carefully and responsibly as possible, that the communication between the nuclear power plant employees is based on strict rules and every move is recorded. We got detailed information about the operating principles of nuclear power plants, the materials used, safety systems and equipment, and we passed the courses successfully. In terms of professional qualifications, the training has been very effective and I am already looking forward to getting to work and putting my skills to life.”
