Turkey Needs a Green Plan!

Turkey is struggling with the biggest forest fires in its history. The increase in temperature and drought in the Mediterranean Basin caused by global climate change threaten our forests. While states and supra-state institutions one after another announce 'green plans' and carbon emission targets to combat global warming, Turkey has to put into effect the Paris Climate Agreement, of which it is a signatory, as soon as possible. Kadir Örücü, the Turkey CEO of BRC, which develops alternative fuel systems that will reduce our carbon footprint, stated that global warming is a real threat and said, “If we do not take the steps to reduce the emission values, greater disasters await humanity. The Paris Climate Agreement should be implemented on a global scale,” he said.

Turkey is grappling with the largest forest fires in its history. Eight of our citizens have lost their lives in the fires, which have been largely brought under control. 8 thousand hectares of forest area burned. 160 settlements were evacuated. While global climate change values ​​are approaching the level of 59 degrees increase, it is stated that the change in air temperature in the Mediterranean Basin has reached 1,5 degrees. The change in the rain regime resulted in increased drought during the summer months. Air temperatures above 2 degrees combined with drought brought forest fires.

“IMPLEMENT THE PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT”

Kadir Örücü said, “All the data we have shows that if we do not reduce the carbon emission values, bigger disasters are at the door.” Contracts like these, which push humanity to develop new solutions in energy production and transportation, show that we are taking action against climate change. The Paris Climate Agreement, of which our country is also a signatory, should be put into effect as soon as possible. Turkey is located in a geography rich in renewable energy resources. By utilizing the riches we have, we can protect ourselves from the disasters that climate change will bring. As individuals, we can develop our own solutions to protect the environment we live in. Energy saving comes first among these solutions. When the energy unit consumed per capita is reduced, the amount of carbon released in energy production also decreases. Instead of using polluting fuels such as diesel in our vehicles, it is also an important step to use more environmentally friendly LPG with low emission values. According to the United Nations data, 30 percent of the world's carbon emissions are caused by the fuels used in transportation.

HOW WILL THE 2035 ZERO EMISSIONS TARGET BE IMPLEMENTED?

Talking about the 2035 'zero emission' and 2030 percent reduction of carbon emission values ​​in 55 set by the European Union, Örücü said, “The European Union has the infrastructure and R&D background that can provide the necessary transformation for zero emissions. However, the increasing need for transportation vehicles in underdeveloped countries pushes sophisticated solutions into the background. Especially in these countries, the fact that necessary steps cannot be taken on the topics that will affect the sustainability, such as infrastructure works, prices, maintenance and lithium batteries for electric vehicles brings to mind alternative fuels. LPG, CNG and hybrid technologies can create a serious alternative in this regard. These countries need cheap and clean vehicles with LPG.

According to the United Nations Climate Change Panel, the global warming potential of LPG was determined as zero. In addition, LPG's emissions of solid particles (PM) that cause air pollution are 25 times less than coal, 10 times less than diesel and 30 percent less than gasoline.

Emphasizing that their goal as BRC is 'net zero emissions', BRC Turkey CEO Kadir Örücü said, “We have set our 'net zero emission' target in our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report that we announced last August. At the heart of our sustainable vision is our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint. First of all, we will further develop our technologies that will encourage environmentally friendly fuels in the short term. In the long term, we are working with all our strength towards our net zero emission target.”
