The Marmara Sea Summit, organized jointly by IMM Istanbul Planning Agency (IPA), Union of Marmara Municipalities and IMM Environmental Protection and Control Department, came to an end. At the Summit, which was held online with the theme of “A Sea on the Edge of Life”, the Sea of Marmara was discussed scientifically on many different axes, from the ecosystem to the economic dimension, from the Canal Istanbul to its legal dimension. The results of the summit will be published on the marmara.istanbul website.
The Marmara Sea Summit, which was jointly organized by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Istanbul Planning Agency (IPA), Marmara Municipalities Union and IMM Environmental Protection and Control Department, with the theme of "A Sea at the Edge of Life", came to an end. At the Summit, which lasted for two days, the present and future of the Sea of Marmara were discussed in a multidimensional and comprehensive manner under various headings.
DETECTIONS AND SUGGESTIONS HAVE BEEN RELEASED
Many topics on the ecosystem of the Sea of Marmara, sources of pollution, the economic dimension of pollution, control and measures to be taken, the effects of Kanal Istanbul and what to do in the future were discussed in six sessions. Experts from disciplines such as marine science, aquatic ecosystem, environmental engineering, economics and environmental law put forward their determination and solution suggestions.
THE SEA OF MARMARA IS CRUSHING
Pointing out that the Marmara Sea is dying, IMM Head of Environmental Protection and Control Department Prof. Dr. Aysen Erdinçler said:
“The sea of Istanbul is dying. We have also experienced mucilage as a cause or as a result of recent impurities. I think the summit was the best indication of the importance that IMM gives to this work, the sensitivity it shows to this work, and the fact that it pays great attention to the scientific nature of its work.”
SUMMIT ROAD MAP DETERMINED
Expressing that the summit determined a roadmap, IMM Deputy Secretary General Orhan Demir said, “It was a summit where all aspects of the Sea of Marmara, with its economy, ecology and purification, were discussed. Invaluable scientists contributed. Of course, they determined a roadmap for us, frankly," he said.
ISSUES BEYOND POLICY
Underlining that the issues discussed at the summit are beyond politics, ITU Lecturer Prof. Dr. Güçlü İnsel said, “All the issues discussed here are beyond politics. Therefore, it concerns our children and our future.”
DENİZ ISTANBUL'S ESSENTIAL
Burcu Özüpak Güleç, Coordinator of the IPA Vision 2050 Office, who stated that the people of Istanbul stated that the Sea of Marmara, the Bosphorus and the coasts are indispensable in the research they had done throughout Istanbul, made the following statement regarding the importance of the Summit:
“In a recent study we conducted, we asked Istanbulites about the features of Istanbul that they cannot give up. They told us the Sea of Marmara, the Bosphorus, and the beaches of Istanbul as indispensable features. Especially young people. Therefore, this summit was very important for us.”
RESULTS WILL BE PUBLISHED ON MARMARA.İSTANBUL WEBSITE
Stating that the results of the summit will be published on the marmara.istanbul website, IPA Secretary General Oktay Kargül gave the following information about the website:
“Actually, this site was created both to inform people and to explain how mucilage started, where it was active and how it looked on the surface. An interactive site. From now on, we will include issues related to the future of Marmara on this site.”
