MİLGEM Fifth (Istanbul frigate) Ship Hull Mounted Sonar Marine Unit Project development activities have been completed

TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM) Materials Institute Underwater Acoustics Laboratory (SAL) continues to work on projects for the needs of the Turkish Navy, as the first and only accredited infrastructure in the field of underwater acoustics in our country. TÜBİTAK MAM and ASELSAN A.Ş. Within the scope of the MİLGEM Fifth Ship Hull Mounted Sonar Marine Unit Project, the development, preparation of the directory structure and test-characterization activities of the Sonar Marine Unit were completed.

Sonar Marine Unit's Factory Acceptance Tests (FKT) activity was carried out between 06-09 July 2021 by Marine Corps, STM and ASELSAN A.Ş. It was carried out successfully in the presence of the Acceptance Committee consisting of officials.

ASELSAN's FERSAH Hull Mounted DSH Sonar system will be used on the MİLGEM fifth ship, the Istanbul frigate. FERSAH is an active/passive sonar operating in the mid-frequency band, and its primary mission is to meet the Submarine Defense Warfare (DSH) needs. In addition to DSH, the System has a mine-like object avoidance mode. ASELSAN FERSAH Hull Mounted DSH Sonar can detect, analyze and track underwater threats such as submarines and mine-like objects in active mode, and underwater threats such as submarines, surface ships and torpedoes in passive mode.

Locality rate will be increased to 75%

Speaking at the launching ceremony of the first ship ISTANBUL in our I-Class Frigate Project, of which STM is the main contractor, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced that the Gökdeniz close air defense system, which is a sea-based variant of the Korkut air defense system, and national vertical launch systems will be used in the ISTANBUL frigate. In his speech, in which Erdoğan also made a statement regarding the 6th, 7th and 8th frigates in the MİLGEM Squadron Class,

“Today, we are bringing Istanbul, which will be the first national frigate of our country, to water. It is very important that we increase this to 70 percent while the national opportunities are 75 percent in corvette class ships. We will bring our ship, which has early recognition and base defense features, to the Naval Forces in 100, in the 2023th year of our Republic. We will also start using the 3D search and illumination radar developed locally and nationally on this ship. We will also use the national vertical thrust system on this ship. Hopefully, we will make our navy much stronger with 5 big projects that we will put into service in 5 years. In addition, we will put our 6 submarines into service with the experience we have gained in submarine technology. We are also starting this process for the construction of the 6th, 7th and 8th frigates in the MİLGEM Stacker Class in the near future. We are also conducting the necessary studies and negotiations regarding our aircraft carrier.” made his statements.
