Izmir Metropolitan Municipality launched a solidarity campaign within the scope of the action plan it prepared to ensure that the green cover of the city can renew itself after the fire. With the “One Sapling, One World” project, the people of İzmir will be able to support the campaign by purchasing saplings.
President Tunç Soyer said, “We carry out our forestation works in İzmir with the principle of forest restoration by planting the right species in the right place, at the right time, on the basis of ecology. I would like to thank you endlessly for the example of solidarity you have shown in order to create a more beautiful Izmir and the world.”
Within the scope of the large-scale action plan initiated by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality to make the green cover of the city renew itself after the fire, Izmir solidarity is being mobilized again. With the “One Sapling, One World” project, the people of İzmir will be able to support İzmir's rapid attainment of a green cover that can regenerate itself after a fire by purchasing saplings. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer said, “Burning forests have the power to renew themselves. In our One Sapling One World project, we carry out forest restoration works that support the self-repair of forests. By buying a sapling, you can contribute to the spread of trees that can regenerate after a fire in İzmir.” Stating that they carry out afforestation work with the right species at the right place, at the right time, and support İzmir's wildlife and biodiversity with native tree species, Soyer said, “The support of our people is important for us to reach our goals. I would like to thank everyone who has already contributed to the One Sapling One World campaign.”
Eight species of trees have saplings and a sapling lap
Those who want to participate in the campaign can see the saplings that can regenerate themselves after a fire on the "birfidanbirdunya.org" website. From the species whose number will be increased in the future, Anatolian acorn oak, laurel, menengiç, wild strawberry-arugula berry, wild pear, oleander, insane olive, hairy oak saplings and saplings can buy as many as they want from the lap of protective saplings.
It is aimed to bring the first saplings to the soil by autumn. The medium-term goal of the Metropolitan is to create resilient forest areas in the city periphery that can regenerate after a fire, to make these areas as "living parks" as nature discovery areas for the people of Izmir, and to connect the parks and forests by creating "green corridors". Within the scope of the “Welcome Baby” campaign launched in January 2020, a sapling for each newborn baby will be planted in these areas.
Izmir's forest ecosystem is protected
With forest restoration, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality aims to equip İzmir with tree and shrub species that are suitable for the Mediterranean climate and do not require irrigation. With the "Forest İzmir" program, the foundation of which was laid in 2019, the green areas in the city are enlarged, while the forest ecosystems of İzmir are protected.
