Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has harvested the wheat it has planted on vacant lands for years. The wheat, which is grown for the first time on an idle 180-decare land, will be delivered to the needy in Istanbul after being ground in the flour factory. The straw that emerges after the harvest and the bran obtained during the grinding period will be used to feed the horses on the islands.

Another important step was taken in order to increase agricultural production in Istanbul, to utilize the vacant agricultural lands and to make the city self-sufficient.

In November last year, bread wheat was planted for the first time on 180 decares of agricultural land, which has been idle for many years. The flour obtained from the wheat harvested this year will be delivered to the Social Services Directorate and delivered to the citizens in need. The straw and bran obtained from the harvest will be sent to the Veterinary Services so that the horses on the islands can be fed. Ali Murat Erdem, Deputy Director of Agriculture and Fisheries, who participated in the harvest for the first time; He said that they wanted to set an example for the farmer while evaluating the unused lands.

TWO KG OF FLOUR WILL BE DISTRIBUTED

In order to encourage agricultural production and to demonstrate the importance of agriculture in Istanbul, bread wheat was planted for the first time in November 2020. Fertilizing the planting in the 180 decare area in Pendik Kurna in the first spring was completed and weed spraying was done. In July, the first harvest was taken with a combine harvester. Ali Murat Erdem, Deputy Director of Agriculture and Fisheries, said that until today, agricultural lands had only a name, and said that the crop obtained from the harvest would be sent to the Social Services Directorate in order to be delivered to the citizens in two-kilogram packages after being processed in the flour factory.

HORSES ON THE ISLANDS ARE NOT FORGOTTEN

IMM, which aims not only to bring agricultural lands to life, but also to benefit from the whole process of operation, will also provide nutritional support for the horses on the islands. While the straw obtained during the harvest is prepared in the form of bales, the bran emerging during grinding will be added to it and conveyed to the Veterinary Services Directorate. Stating that all units of the municipality act jointly and in coordination on behalf of the citizens, Ali Murat Erdem said that they aim to both support the residents of Istanbul and set an example for the farmers by evaluating the empty agricultural lands.
