A positive development was experienced in the application of IMM for the “EU for Energy Transformation: Contract of Mayors in the Western Balkans and Turkey Project”. Within the scope of the project, the EU will provide consultancy services to IMM on the development of the “Sustainable Energy and Climate Plan” (SECAP), and will provide grant support of 3 million Euros.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) continues to receive positive results from its applications to bring together sustainable energy and climate-friendly projects with the city. As a result of the initiatives of the Foreign Relations Department, IMM was entitled to receive a grant of 3 million Euros from the project “EU for Energy Transformation: Contract of Mayors in the Western Balkans and Turkey” project. Project activities; It will last four years in a total of seven countries, six of which are the Western Balkan countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, the Republic of North Macedonia and the Republic of Serbia) and Turkey.

“SUSTAINABLE” COOPERATION BETWEEN THE BALKANS AND TURKEY

The project, whose Turkish leg will be carried out with the coordination of the Central Project Management Agency (CPMA) from Lithuania, aims to achieve energy transformation and combat climate change in the Western Balkans and Turkey in its most general form. In this context, the project will support cities in the Western Balkans and Turkey that are party to the Convention of Mayors in fulfilling their commitments within the scope of energy and climate targets.

ALKANALKA: “GRANT WILL BRING GREAT WINNINGS TO ISTANBUL”

Sharing his views on the project, Alkanalka, Head of the IMM Foreign Relations Department, said, "We are trying to get results in parallel with the goal agreed by the EU - to reduce CO2030 emissions by at least 2 percent by 40 - and to include the international mechanism in the concrete steps taken to increase the resilience of the city against the effects of climate change. this grant will bring great profit to Istanbul and our country”.

PRESIDENT İMAMOĞLU TALKED ABOUT THE CLIMATE ACTION PLAN AND THE RENEWABLE ENERGY TARGETS

Speaking at the 2021 Climate Adaptation Summit (CAS 2021), held in January 2021, Mayor İmamoğlu stated that in order to become a resilient city, they have already produced inclusive and sustainable solutions to the problems of the future:

In this context, we continue to work on the 'Climate Action Plan' and we are designing Istanbul 2.0, which is based on smart city solutions, is environmentally friendly, gives priority to sustainable solutions in the fields of transportation infrastructure, food and agriculture policies, and waste and long-term water management. Again in June 2020, İmamoğlu made the opening speech of the 10th IRENEC International 100 percent Renewable Energy Conference and said, “As IMM, we aim to advance on the path of 100 percent renewable energy use as a top priority.”
