The first electrified railway line in the Western China Autonomous Tibet Region was put into operation last Friday. The said line connects Lhasa, the capital of the region, with the city of Nyingchi. Thus, the “Fuxing” high-speed train (YHT) is also put into service in the high Tibetan plateau.

It is envisaged that a speed of 435 kilometers will be made on a single electric line of 160 kilometers. Currently, there are nine stations on the line in the cities of Lhasa, Shannan and Nyingchi to serve passengers and unload cargo.

This newly opened Lhasa-Nyingchi line constitutes the first rail link and rail transport service in the history of south-east Tibet. The said connection takes the Lhasa-Nyingchi journey from 5 hours to 3,5 hours when compared to the highway; It reduces the trip from Shannan to Nyingchi from 6 hours to about 2 hours.

On this occasion, Fuxing passengers, which were developed independently from China for the first time, were also transported to Tibet. In fact, high-speed train service has been put into service in all province-level regions within mainland China. All Fuxing trains currently operating cover the speed scale of 160 to 350 kilometers per hour. This is a remarkable achievement of Chinese innovation capacity in the railway sector.

The construction of this line started in March 2015. More than 90 thousand workers worked for the construction of this railway line, 3 percent of which is 130 thousand meters and above sea level. With 47 tunnels and 121 bridges on its route, Yarlung crosses the Zangbo river 16 times from one side to the other. Tunnels and bridges make up almost 75 percent of the entire line.
