Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Road Construction, Maintenance and Repair Department teams completed the construction of the culvert on the Mergin road, which has been expected for years in Erdemli and is known as the “Mergin Bridge” among the people. The culvert on the Mergin road, which the Metropolitan Mayor Vahap Seçer gave the good news that it will be opened in the past days, will give a sigh of relief to both the residents of the region and those who transport products on that route.
Mergin road is important for the people of the region and agricultural production
Road Construction Maintenance and Repair Department teams completed the construction of the culvert on the group road connecting 8 neighborhoods between Hüsametli and Yeniyurt Neighborhoods in Erdemli district in order to ensure the safety of life and comfortable transportation of citizens in traffic. The location on the Mergin Stream, which connects many districts and Central Anatolia from the center of Erdemli, is of vital importance for the products with high export potential produced in the region and surrounding districts to reach domestic and foreign markets.
50 years of ordeal is over
A more comfortable and safe transportation will be provided thanks to the construction of the culvert and group road improvement works, which were started and completed in a short time due to the fact that the old Mergin road does not comply with the highway standards and threatens the safety of life and property. Thus, the 50-year ordeal of the residents of the region came to an end. Within the scope of the works, 54 meters long, 8 meters wide and 6 meters high culverts were manufactured, 1162 meters of road improvement and 13 thousand square meters of double layer surface coating were manufactured.

Bulent Arslan, the headman of Veyselli District, one of the neighborhoods to which the road is connected, said that the route, which was built in the 1970s and became inadequate by wearing out over time, has been neglected until today despite causing many problems. Emphasizing that the road provides access to many neighborhoods and plateaus, Arslan said, “This bridge ordeal, this road has been suffering until now. After our Vahap President came, he made a promise to our people; He said 'this will be done' and his analysis started. The traders were always causing trouble because of our old, small, narrow bridge. If the tomato is 1 lira, they were thinking of buying it for 80-90 cents, they used the road as an excuse. I would like to thank Vahap President and his team individually, and wish good luck to our people, our village and our nation.

Mahmut Tat, a resident of Yeniyurt Neighborhood, stated that the said transit route has been a dream of the citizens of the region for 50 years and said, “My Vahap President promised, he built this road. I thank him. This road was the dream of these villages for 50 years. Some friends here also said; 'This road cannot be built here, they fled, they migrated'. Everyone will come and pass from here with luck. Let those who criticize see this path. I invite them here too. This service came here. This is the landslide zone. There was a cliff, the stones were rolling in the winter months. Cars were skidding in the snow. When we crossed the road, we got rid of these dangers. I would like to thank Vahap President very much," he said.

Yusuf Şahin, a resident of Yeniyurt Mahallesi, talked about the difficulties they experienced on the road they used to go to school on foot in 1962, saying, “In 1962, we used to go to Hüsametli on foot from this road. After 1962, we couldn't go on that road across the street. The tractor could hardly come down from these roads. We couldn't pass. Now this road has been built, it has been very nice. While we are passing this road, while we are going around the bend; Especially in the winter months, we used to be afraid of when the stone would fall on us, the rock would collapse, the mountain would come down while we were driving. Our road was beautiful. For 18-20 years, our people, our mukhtars were constantly trying, but they could not do it. Nobody made our way. Kudos to this man, he made our way. He made our way very well, we are satisfied.”
“Although 45 years have passed, no politician has done any work here”
One of the residents of Tapureli Neighborhood, Mehmet Emin Özgür is one of the citizens who use the road as a heavy vehicle driver. Stating that the road has not been built since the 1970s, Özgür said, “Although 45 years have passed, no politician has done any work here. Unfortunately, those who govern our country have come and gone from here for almost 19-20 years, they did politics here and did not even think of working here, but service is not worthy of everyone. We are happy that our esteemed Metropolitan Mayor Vahap Seçer has done such a work here.”

Adding that as a driver, they have a hard time with the fear of landslides in the winter months, Özgür added, “The connection here has changed the fate of 5-6 villages on the connection road. The biggest excuse of the exporters who came here was that the transportation conditions were difficult, the trucks were not coming, and they had dreams of lowering our prices. Today, thank God, this road is a result that will make people's eyes happy when you look from the opposite side. We would like to thank Vahap President for his hard work here. There is a saying, so to speak; the horse dies, the shoe remains, the valiant dies, his reputation remains; Today, our Mayor has a work that will remind him of his name in the coming years.”
