The tubitak mam ship, which will draw the earthquake map of the Aegean Sea, has started its expedition

Within the scope of the "Determination of Seismicity and Active Tectonic Characteristics of Faults in Kuşadası Bay with High Resolution Seabed Measurements" initiated by TÜBİTAK, which started to investigate the seismicity of faults extending from land to Kuşadası Bay after the earthquake that occurred in the Aegean Sea on 30 October 2020 The TÜBİTAK MAM Ship, which was assigned to duty, started its 10-day voyage by taking anchor from İzmir Alsancak Port.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır and TÜBİTAK President Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal said goodbye. Reminding that 30 citizens died and 2020 citizens were injured in the earthquake that took place in the Aegean Sea on October 117, 1034, Kacır said, "I wish God's mercy to all our citizens who lost their lives on this occasion, and get well soon to all of Turkey, to Izmir once again." said.

Pointing out that TÜBİTAK's recent studies, our country has been trying to support researchers working in the same field and working in different universities together, Kacır said, the last example of this is the COVID-20, where nearly 500 researchers have been brought together in nearly 19 scientific research projects. He stated that he was observed on his platform. Stating that scientists from different universities of our country have been brought together on our Antarctic flights, Kacır continued as follows: “Now here, this time from 4 different universities; Our researchers from Istanbul University, Istanbul Technical University, Middle East Technical University and Dokuz Eylul University will carry out this research with the support of AFAD and our Naval Forces. We will bring together our scientists who continue their studies in geology, geophysics and underwater research.”

Pointing out that the TÜBİTAK MAM Ship has undertaken important responsibilities in many studies, especially in environmental research projects, Kacır said, “We will try to contribute to earthquake research with this ship, with our advanced devices and equipment.”

Stating that the scientific outputs to be obtained as a result of this expedition will also be shared on international platforms and that our country's competence in these fields will have the chance to be examined and observed in all international platforms, Kacır said, "We will continue these studies for a period of about 2 years after this expedition. We will continue to contribute to the scientific studies of our country in terms of earthquake preparedness. I hope the expedition will be beneficial for our country and our nation," he said.

WE WILL JOIN OUR FORCES AGAINST EARTHQUAKES

TÜBİTAK President Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, in his speech while sending the TÜBİTAK MAM Ship to his voyage, stated that the earthquake process, which we see as a difficulty today, will be handled with the approach of working together and achieving together, with a method similar to the COVID-19 Turkey Platform vaccine and drug development studies. Stating that our competent universities and related institutions (AFAD, Naval Forces Command, Navigation Hydrography and Oceanography Department) will take off together in Turkey, Prof. Dr. Mandal stated that the expedition team will work day and night both in our own territorial waters and in international waters.

WE WILL FIND TRACES OF THE EARTHQUAKE IN THE SEA

Pointing to our competence in following the traces of the earthquake on land, Prof. Dr. Mandal said, “We follow the active faults and the traces of the earthquake on land. We think we know this area well. But we don't have enough information on this dimension in the process coming from the sea. Our goal in this regard is to find traces of active fault lines in the sea, active fault lines in Kuşadası starting from the land, in the first expedition. Both our professors in the field of geophysics and our competent professors in the field of geology will take part in the process together.”

Stating that the TÜBİTAK MAM Ship will be welcomed by the Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank upon his return from his voyage, Prof. Dr. Mandal stated that when the ship returns from the voyage, both their experiences and the early stage information they have obtained will be shared.

Noting that there are many institutions that contribute to the process, Prof. Dr. Mandal said, “We would like to thank AFAD, our Naval Forces Command, Dokuz Eylül University, Istanbul University, Istanbul Technical University, Middle East Technical University, our friends at TUBITAK MAM, and TÜRKSAT for their contributions to the process as a sponsor.”

WE WILL CONDUCE EARTHQUAKE WORKS WITH OUR OWN RESOURCES

Stating that there were 11 researchers and 12 crew members on the expedition, Prof. Dr. Mandal noted that a project team of 40 people in total will work for 2 years to wait for these results in the field, universities and laboratories, to analyze them quickly and share them with the public. prof. Dr. Mandal said, "The work of our country in this area will be provided by the data produced by our own country, not from other country sources, and a scientific-based study will be carried out so that we are much more prepared for the earthquakes we may encounter in the future."

WE WILL ALSO SHARE THE RESULTS OF OUR RESEARCH WITH GREEK SCIENTISTS

TÜBİTAK President Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, upon the question posed, stated that an offer was also made to Greece regarding the earthquake project, that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs contributed at this stage, but that they were informed that the Greek authorities could not take quick action due to the effect of the pandemic process. Noting that they wish researchers from Greece to be on the TÜBİTAK MAM Ship, Prof. Dr. Mandal said, “We will share the results with the scientists in Greece, because the earthquake is a common problem of the region. We wanted to cooperate with a science-based approach, but unfortunately they could not catch up.”
